As of today mine is still in the US.
Digikey did their usual song and dance re asking about intended end use.
As it's a super-dangerous ITAR munition that must not fall into the
wrong hands they needed my assurance that I was only to use it for
light-side applications. I may have to leave it at home next time I
travel to China.
My initial description of application said I wanted it to evaluate the
various capabilities of the product, but apparently that wasn't good
enough. So UI sent them a nice list of creative possibilities, all of
which would be nice to get to sooner or later. Fitting my answer in
their ITAR reason box may prove problematic.
To make up for the delay the nice folk at Farnement14 this morning
delivered 17kg of freight-free p order - including 4 x steel shell 44
drawer parts-cabinets all the way from the UK. At least, they
certainly BETTER be freight free - that's what the offer said. Very
nice they are too - 44? drawers, steel case. Nicely made. Soon to have
plastic drawers lightly sprayed with Nickel spray to notionally ESD
protect them - yet to investigate whether plastic used is ESD-OK as is
but no reason to think so.

ah the ol' munitions question.
I put "R&D" and had a follow up email asking what specifically.
"R&D for a personal fitness and training evaluation system"
Well, I couldn't exactly say "$25 of fun for a geek" could I?

What? You've never watched a James Bond film? Even pens and shoes are dangerous, and Digikey might one day sell steel toe cap antistatic boots with 'go-faster' stripes on them, which all good Mr T. Ists would want to use.
At least they are not like Bull Electrical who just accuse you of being a naughty person and refuse your order.

I better be careful what I say ... the UK government is wanting to require all ISPs to have a means for GCHQ to be able to tap into any communications ...
Around this place the H&S people have put up posters about things we need to be careful about, as we are a research lab, and so we need to keep track of things we buy, such as duty free alcohol (IPA) and weapons precursors (picture shows man in breathing apparatus emerging from sulphurous yellow cloud). On the basis of the latter picture, it could be assumed that I need to don a Darth Vader helmet each time I handle the ITAR electronic components we use ...

IPA is used, I'm told, for extracting Cannabis resin.
My local chemist shop would only sell me 50cc at a time at a truly
horrendous price. I had to sigh a register.
A few months later I chanced to wander through a shopping centre in a
lower socio economic area in Auckland and found 1,2 and 4 litre
bottles of IPA at far far better prices. I asked the shop owner if he
sold much, thinking that he may do a roaring trade init. He said he
only sells a bottle every few months. I told him about the use for
resin production and he was surprised. Seemed genuine. No signature
required.

That got me into an internet search.
I'd never heard it as a standard phrase, but it seems to be widely
used as a canned phrase to mean exactly what it appears to mean
eg That was a very fortunate escape etc
One Spanish speaker gave the English interpretation of "by a frog's hair".
It may have alternate renderings in the hands of lesser denizens, but
none such became apparent in my admittedly non-exhaustive search.

Once had a woman claiming to be a lab tech in front of me in line at the local (big chain) supermarket buying several bottles of 99% IPA. She said it was for the lab, and MUCH cheaper than buying it through the usual lab suppliers (plus, no hazmat shipping charges. Plus (apparently) no restriction on concentration (Ca has some sort of "can't be used unless diluted to at least 90% rule. Or something.))
IPA is the usual reason why the Tech bench of electronics companies ends up with a hazmat locker and disposal issues. Flammable liquid, you know. Probably "known to the state of California to be suspected of maybe being related to something that might cause cancer.

Local Sony repair agents say Chemist shop (pharmacy) IPA probably OK
for camera sensor cleaning but that bulk supermarket stuff is suspect.
I intend to try distilling some of the bulk IPA I bought to see if
there is any discernible difference. Vacuum distillation may be wiser,
but distillation at atmospheric safe enough if sensible - and far
enough away when it blows :-).

Not Ethyl, Jim.
For drinkers of IPA we have hospitals.
Actually, I don't know what effect IPA has when ingested*.
The IPA concerned is already notionally 99%+ and has no emetics or
similar added, so distillation is unlikely to improve its
comestibility.

Hmmm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isopropyl_alcohol
Isopropyl alcohol and its metabolite, acetone, act as central nervous
system (CNS) depressants. Symptoms of isopropyl alcohol poisoning
include flushing, headache, dizziness, CNS depression, nausea,
vomiting, anesthesia, and coma. Poisoning can occur from ingestion,
inhalation, or absorption; therefore, well-ventilated areas and
protective gloves are recommended. Around 15 g of isopropyl alcohol
can have a toxic effect on a 70 kg human if left untreated.[14]
However, it is not nearly as toxic as methanol or ethylene glycol.
Isopropyl alcohol does not cause an anion gap acidosis (in which as
lowered blood serum pH causes depletion of bicarbonate anion) unlike
ethanol and methanol. Isopropyl alcohol does however, produce an
osmolal gap between the calculated and measured osmolalities of serum,
as do the other alcohols. Overdoses may cause a fruity odor on the
breath as a result of its metabolism to acetone, which is further
metabolized to produce the nutrients acetate and glucose.[15]
Isopropyl alcohol is oxidized to form acetone by alcohol dehydrogenase
in the liver.
but
Isopropyl alcohol dissolves a wide range of non-polar compounds. It
also evaporates quickly and is relatively non-toxic, compared to
alternative solvents. Thus it is used widely as a solvent and as a
cleaning fluid, especially for dissolving oil

It is not just NDA but why do they ask in the first place? And why would
not they sell it to you if you deny to answer? Can they refuse to sell
actually (according to trading law or to the discrimination act)?
It never happened to me that I bought potato and the shop asked me what

I suppose the question you should ask yourself is "do you look like
a terrorist?"
I know, it's crazy some of the rules we have, a good example is:-
A convicted criminal, who is sentenced to more than 6 months in
prison, is not allowed
to purchase or let-off fireworks.
(this is a current law too, not one of the silly old ones)
