'[OT] SoCal is burning... again...'

Just incase anyone missed it or is interested, Southern California is pretty
much on fire. They have evacuated some really large areas. The best map I've
seen of it is this Google map:
<maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=114250687465160386813.00043d08ac3
1fe3357571>
Which shows the evacuated areas (not necessarily areas that are really
burning) in red and the areas that are on standby to evacuate in light
yellow. My house, family and I are in the latter area.
There is a pretty good satellite picture here:
http://www.2020hindsight.org/2007/10/22/san-diego-fire-twitter
Amazingly enough very few people have been killed or injured, the local
state and federal governments are actually cooperating, along with the local
military (and there are a lot of those) and volunteers of labor and supplies
are in abundance.
For now, it is just wait and watch.

Ummm what have you done to protect the Piclist archives/server?
Hopefully you have a hard drive image of it somewhere VERY safe.

So.....Any chance of catching the SOB(s) that
are lighting these fires?
See

This is a 1Km per pixel image from today. The 250m res
is much better, but is BIG.
Good luck to all you folks down there, be safe.

If it hadn't been an SOB, it would have been lightning, or an innocent
mistake, or something else. After 10 years of drought, 3 inches TOTAL rain
last year, it was only a matter of time.

Cool. Found out today I'm in yesterdays mandatory evac area, but never
got notified. My sister in San Marcos was evac'd this afternoon, turned out to be a "reverse-911" screwup. What a surprise.
Glad to hear you're OK.

Well I hope that is all you need to do. The fires have been well mentioned
on the news here in the UK. Thoughts go out to all those in this area.

I did hear today that the FBI has issued a warrant for a suspect who may
have set one of the many fires. There are always nut cases, no need to look
deeper than that as far as I can tell.

Just been away for 3+ days. Good to hear that things seem to
be under control.
SOMETIMES the arsonists can render a service. As James says,
enough fuel left dry enough long enough will ultimately self
combust. Starting distributed fires sooner can help. It's of
no joy to those adjacent to such spots but may end up being
in the greater interest. Not that has anything to do with
the miscreants motivations.
I have a friend who at one stage was a volunteer fire
brigade chief. They had tables linking dry matter, slope and
wind speed (AFAIR) - maybe some other things as well. Above
a certain outcome you climb into the truck and drive away
(fast usually) as there is nothing sensible to do but to let
it burn - at least not with their levels of resource.
