These aren't quite that short but are quality cables at a reasonable price.

I've bought all kinds of cables (serial, USB, network) from these guys for
years and the quality has always been good and the price reasonable.

Check out dealextreme.com they have adapters that look about 3" long,
and also have retractable cables that seem smallish.

Check out http://www.monoprice.com. I haven't ordered from them yet
but I'd like to try soon. The prices are ridiculously low. If they
work out I'll be using them for cables moving forward.

Soldering splices & connectors on that type of cable has been challenging
for me. Usually the insulation is very fragile when heated. If you have any
advice for the process please pass it along!
