'[OT] Samsung Parts'

I have never especially noticed Samsung as a brand of electronic parts.
(KAxxx for analog discretes).
I note however that RS prices for Samsung discretes are generally much
cheaper than competitive parts from other manufacturers.

This may just represent a special RS/Samsung arrangement but may bear
investigating.

Of particular interest to me was a TO92 regulator (KA76L05Z) with low
dropout specs and max input voltage apparently similar to the LM2936 (which
I use due to its very low quiescent current, very low dropout, higher than
many max input voltage) and at a MUCH lower price from RS.

I don't know (yet) a local supplier for this brand but my particular
interest at the moment is availability in Asia so it should be ideal in that
respect.

Russell,

Forgive my ignorance, but who is RS? Surely you don't mean the Rat Shack,
do you?

For reference, TOKO has a series of LDO regs - advertised in
Digikey. Not especially cheap, but worth looking at.

I haven't sized this up for your app, but you might look at the idea
of using a 7660-type voltage converter chip in a voltage doubler
configuration. These chips are pretty cheap from Mouser.

Sean,

RS stands for "Radio Spares" and they are a huuuuge ish orgnisation who
supplky electrical and mechanical parts. They have branches all over the
world.

Their claims to fame are -

- Vast product line
- Large part are in stock locally.
- Rarer items can be obtained in 1 day often or about 6 days at most.
- Very very very expensive
- Will sell in small quantities as happily as in thousands.
(some small items have minimum order quantities but this is usually OK)

They are a superb source of instant parts for prototype and one off work but
you pay through the nose.
SOMETIMES their prices are as cheao as anywhere else but often as not they
cost 3, 5, 10 or 20 times as much !!! Usually about 5 times going rate!

They should be in a city near you and every EE should have an account with
them (it's free, no complaint about small quantity, ewxcellent CD ROM data
resource, excellent catalog (but our one has prices ij rear this year which
is a pain).

See this link for the UK parent company.

There is a link for "worldwide" which should give a pointer to an agency near
you. I do not know if they are in USA though.

Thanks, Russell, and to Alan, for the URL.

It is amazing to me that they have a pull-down list of about 100 different
countries in which they have affiliates and the U.S. is NOT listed! I
wonder if they just didn't want to try to compete with
Digikey,Mouser,Pioneer, etc.?

Another interesting thing to me is that I have seen people on this list
mention "Radio Spares" before, but I always thought it was yet another
derrogatory reference to Radio Shack!
