I'm in the job hunt, and I'm wondering if anyone
has any feelings about recruiters/contract-to-hire
type work.

I'm currently speaking with Aerotek Staffing, but
not at the job offer stage yet.  AIUI, they would
place me with an employer for a 6-month (or so)
contract, after which time either the contract is
reupped, I'm hired by the employer, or I move on
to somewhere else.  Aerotek would be my
official employer, even though I spend my days
at some other office.

This sounds like a great deal to me- AFAIK, I'm
not expected to pony up any dough for this (I'd
be hesitant if they asked me to), and they are
basically offering to find me a job.  As a young
engineer with fairly little experience under my
belt, this seems like a good way to get some
diverse experiences with different workplaces
and skills, or at least a good way to get my
foot in a door somewhere.  They called me
within half an hour of receiving my resume,
but I have nothing to gauge whether that is
a good thing or if they do that with everyone.

Thoughts?  Job openings in the Minneapolis/
St. Paul metro area?  Resume available, just
ask! ;-)

I'm currently in a contract position, after working as an atual
employee at a couple of previous jobs.  While the contract position
does have its upsides (paid hourly, can't work more than 40
hours/week) it also has downsides (paid hourly, can't work more than
40 hour/week).  The main things I dislike about the contract position
are the lack of benefits (health insurance is expensive), the lack of
vacation days (sometimes it's nice to be able to take a Friday off - I
didn't get paid for holidays until I was here for several months - but
I couldn't work either), and the way I can't actually talk to my
employer about things like taking time off, etc.  Other contracting
firms provide benefits packages - either employee-paid or company-paid
- and some provide vacation pay.  Honestly, I dislike being in a
position that's quite temporary and has no chance of a raise without
getting a new job.  It was available when my previous employer ran out
of money, though, and it pays well enough for me to deal with the
problems for a short time. :)

The contract's up in a few months, and I'm looking for a permanent
position.  I'll take a contract-to-hire if that's all that I find, but
honestly this particular experience has left an unpleasent taste in my
mouth - but that's *just* the contracting part.  I actually like the
job itself.  I think I'd like it a little better if it was one that I
could continue doing for beyond the end of the non-renewable contract.

So, from talking to friends who do contract work, it can work out well
- just make sure you ask questions about the terms, benefits, etc.
Like any other job, I suppose.  Make sure you find out about how the
thing terminates - if you can leave before the end without having some
kind of non-compete or similar to deal with, etc.

I think this is a bad idea for an engineer with relatively little work
experience.  Think of it from the employer's point of view.  They have to
pay a premium for people like that, and therefore only do it when they have
to.  That usually means the job market is so tight they can't get talent any
other way, or they need a specialized skill temporarily.  In the first case
you can find a job yourself with little trouble, and in the second case you
don't have the specialized expertise, or at least you won't be able to
convince anyone of that with just a few years experience.

You should consider head hunters and contract agencies as a last resort
only.  Both make you more expensive to the end employer, and may employers
have rules not to use such people without a lot of extra approvals.  Also
watch out that both will often "enhance" your resume.  Always bring your own
resume to an interview no matter how you were introduced.

We've hired people through such agencies, and (I think) been
pretty satisfied.  One thing you might want to be aware of is
that if you take a permanent position after that initial 6m,
you may need to take a pay cut.  Something about accounting
and benefits differences between contract employees and real
employees.  We had several contractors that stayed contractors
for long enough to kick themselves for not taking the FT job
and getting the associated stock options...

Beware somewhat of getting a job you're not qualified for.
Some such agencies have a tendency to inflate your qualifications.

If they do that with everyone, that's really good, though in a
slightly different way!  The biggest complaint I've heard over
the years about sending a resume somewhere is the deep silence
that occurs in response :-(

I have had experience with one Job Shop (contract agency?).  Took four
assignments and three were great experiences,  The fourth assignment was
where they were doing nothing.

I did not have the specialized experience but by drawing from my background,
was able to learn quickly.  Main thing is to be honest with interviewer.
And to have some experience to draw from.

And of course, the assignments added to my experiences.  Have you noticed
how many times I used word "experience".  Guess in electronics, secret is
"experience, experience, experience".
