'[OT] Recommendations for free web site providers'

All,
Does anyone have a recommendation for a free web site provider?  I have
decided to join the 20th century and create my own web site (of which
part of the content will be PIC related of course).  Some of the ones I
know of are xoom.com, geocities, juno, homestead?.  What others are out
there?  Are there any that don't have a preponderance of advertising?  I
would prefer one without the pop up window with advertising, but don't
know if I can find that or not.  Are there any to avoid due to slowness
of the server?  I know some of the free web sites I visit are glacially
slow due to the volume on the providers server.

TIA, and reply privately if you don't feel this is a good piclist topic.

has pop-ups, but you can disable them if you put banners on the top of your
pages instead.  Much nicer.

Don't use WebJump if you want to allow downloading of information like .pdf
files.  WebJump doesn't allow downloading of files.  :((((

Save the pdf file as an html...

document.pdf.html

Then tell people on the web site to 'save link' instead of just clicking on it.
Tell them then to rename it as document.pdf...  Webjump should allow it to
download.

(untried, but might work...)

I'm using DigiWeb with good results.

If you WANT...you could check out http://www.picpoint.com and scroll down to the
bottom. The webmaster is looking for people who have PIC related stuff that
they wanna make a webpage out of. Ignore the crap up top about "We'll be
online very shortly" It's been like that for months now.

OTOH, in the not-all-that-expensive category, I know
that my ISP (eskimo.com, with which I'm not affliated
other than happy customer, blah, blah...) offers
a full remote Unix shell account for $9/month,
$72/year.  Includes 10MB storage, web and anonymous
ftp hosting, cgi, email (within shell & POP), hosting of
two mailing lists, full newsfeed access, and excellent
service with virtually no hassles. But, it isn't free.

The best deal I've found is http://www.hostsave.com.  5 pops, 45M,
1 GB tranfer, Frontpage 2000, cgi, ftp, unlimited forwarding, Full
stats, etc.

$6.95/month!  I am currently hosting http://www.enlight.ca, my
company, still a work in progress.

What I want is someone to host http://www.enlightened.org for me,
but I don't want to have to pay for it, as it's intention is to
host hacker stuff, demos, etc.

I have learnt (using Netscape 4) to have JavaScript disabled until I
come across something for which I really need it (some shonky search
engines, for example).  A *much* more pleasant experience.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a browser set up for the brain-enabled
with the Java on/ off button on the taskbar?  Amongst all the hype (as
on TV last night) about the Net "continuously evolving", I see very
little real improvement in the last few years.

But then my benchmark is the ability to locate *real* (as opposed to
"virtual") data such as the datasheets for a NEC FC40X2D-AA VF display.

Aha!  Freecenter has just responded.  It only took a minute or two!

I can recommend http://free.prohosting.com
CGI, FTP, POP3, 15MB (was 50MB I think), no popups, banners, buttons etc
if you don't like them.
I've had an account for about a year, works ok for me.

Ok but....

Your URL http://henrik.lewander.com is kinda slow... and your have a
registered domain so (according to http://free.prohosting.com 's FAQ) you
are paying for the service. Which they admit, gets you preferential service.

Questions:
0. Am I correct that you are a paying customer of prohosting.com?
1. How long have you been paying vice free?
2. How happy were you when you were not paying?
3. How much did they bug you with email asking if you wouldn't like the
benefits of paid service?

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear it seems.

0. No
1. 0 secs (ok I havn't heard about the term "vice" fee before (I'm
Swedish you know), but I havn't paid anything yet =)
2. Quite satisfied, although I have to admit it's not my primary site
but every time I check it it works =) And I download my mail
automatically every 10 minutes or so.
3. Never except for some policy changes and such.

As for speed, I'm in Europe so that's probably why
http://henrik.lewander.com is slow. It's extremely fast here (maybe
because the server is in my wardrobe), but prohosting is a bit slow.
Dunno how fast prohosting is for you guys. I figure anything is better
than geocities and such places...? Well that's my 2 cents anyway (where
does this expression come from in the first place??)

btw, one more tip: check out http://www.hypermart.net where they have
serious _business_ hosting for free. You have to show ads though.
