I've been a skydiver for some time. You reach 360 km/h when you dive.
Wouldn't imagine open at that speed. You have to slow down to aprox 190 kph
before opening (by reconfiguring your fall position, from dive to stable
'lay down').

Some parachutes are designed to handle high airspeed opening by using a
constraining ring that prevents the chute from opening fully until it has
slowed to an acceptable speed.  Many drag chutes use this method.

i believe these guys http://www.extremefly.com/ use a lack of crossports
to slow the openings, where these guys http://www.basicresearch.com/
use 'vtec' to do the opposite, great stuff...
