I second that! From my days in Telecom I have found that in the "real world"
Tip and Ring are often reversed. I would use a full-wave bridge reticifer to
avoid the arc welding if I were doing it.

When they cut Waikiki over to ESS, they lost half the phones. It seems
they were all done with tone dialers, but without a bridge. I guess
everyone just reversed the wires till it worked. :)

How do you sell phones without bridges? You do mean the phones, not
the line equipment? Oh well in the US I suppose ...
No, actually, I think Andy's reference to "Proper direction
(orientation)" may have been mis-understood. I suspect he was referring
to the prayers, not the phone line.

You mean like 50%?
In my early days I treated them interchangable and didn't even know they have
different names :---)
