I didnt see any replies, maybe my first try didn't make it.

I'm in pittsburgh for the forseeable future. (!)  I'm wondering who
might be close by, and what sorts of electronic/hobby/surplus sorts of
shops are in the area.

Anyone?

I saw the earlier one but didn't reply since it's a long, long way
away from here.

I use to live somewhat close to Pittsburgh and would go there every
weekend. Wonderful city.

Unfortunately I dont know of any electronic stores in the area besides
the normal Radio Shack, but I'd check the phone book, or around the
CMU campus (Oakland).

If you ever get a chance try Permanti Brothers restaurant. It's a nice
eatery and "The O" which is on the corner by CMU campus. Both favorite
hangouts during my college years.

The Carnegie Science center is really nice and in the area as well.
There's also an Imax theatre downtown.

Good luck, hope you enjoy the 'burg :) Go Steelers

Yes, I'm in Pittsburgh.  I work in Cheswick (about 10 minutes north of
Pittsburgh on route 28), and live in North Hills (about 5 minutes north
of Pittsburgh off I-279).  I don't venture into the South Hills or the
South Side much, but that seems to be where much of the cultural things
go on.  East Carson street in the South Side is where a lot of the
smaller shops and bars are - if you like that sort of thing.  You're
also not far from Dahntahn (learn to pronounce it that way) and Station
Square (Hard Rock Cafe, comedy club, etc).
I don't really know of too much close by in the way of
electronics/hobby/surplus in the area, but you'll probably find
something in the South Side if anywhere.  I do know of an Army Surplus
store on route 51 - not too far from the South Side - but that's about it.

Yes, the Carnegie Science Center is wonderful - on the North Shore by
PNC Park (Pirates) and Heinz Field (Steelers).  I don't know if you have
kids, but I used to take my kids there.  It's four flours of some pretty
neat stuff.
There are also other Carnegie museums around -
http://www.carnegiemuseums.org/ - Natural History, Kids Museum, Warhol,
Museum of Art, etc.
I think the "O" (The Original Hot Dog Shoppe) is gone - or at least in
the process of being sold.  It was actually closer to Pitt than CMU, but
students from both would hang out there.
The IMAX theater is part of the Science Center.  There is also the Buhl
planetarium there.  They do laser shows - don't know if they still do,
but they used to do late night shows like Laser Floyd (Pink Floyd music)
and Laser Zeppelin (Led Zeppelin music).

Sad to hear about the "O" they had the best homemade "real" fries.
I saw the Zeppelin laser who when I was 18 and it was amazing :)

Didnt know about the Andy Warhol museum even though I like his art.
Will have to look it up next time I'm in PA.

Warhol was from Pittsburgh, so they put a museum of his work - and
sometimes some traveling exhibits - on the North Side.

As far as the "O" goes, I stand corrected.

Apparently there was a separate CMU location apart from the Pitt Oakland
location.  It is apparently still open.
