Anyone got a manufacturer and part number on the 4 pin connectors that will
mate with floppy and hard drive power connectors?  I've looked through both
Newark and DigiKey and nothing seems quite right.  Considering how common
this part is, I must have been staring right at it and didn't know it.

thanks,
newell

Radar Electric (Seattle store) sells them, Molex makes these IIRC?  I
can definitely get you some, worst case <G>)  Aaah.  Knew I'd seen
these, as I am about to get some;  Try the current Jameco catalog, page
48, Jameco part numbers 109145, 117567, 42075, 42067, 42729, 42649 for
connectors & pins, the last 4 are probably what you want (first 2 are
PCB Mount male vertical & horizontal mount.)  About 65 cents a
connector, with pins <G>  (http://www.jameco.com)

They also have the smaller 3.5" FDD connectors, same page.

I assume you mean the older, larger style used on larger
5-1/4" floppy disk drives and still used on hard drives.

Usually the drive manufacturers list a the part numbers
of mating connecters in their manuals.  From an old Seagate
Wren 6 (5-1/4" full height) disk drive product manual:

   recommended mating connector parts

   connector: Amp 1-480424-0

   contacts: Amp 60619-4 (loose piece)
             Amp 61117-4 (strip)

In my Digi-Key catalog, it didn't jump out at me either.  But
it is in there.

The Digi-Key catalog I'm looking at is dated Oct-Dec 1999.  On
page 56 of that issue, see Amp Commercial Mate-N-Lok Connectors.
See Mate-N-Lok Free-Hanging Rectangular Connectors, Digi-Key part
number A1431-ND, 4 pin socket housing, Amp 1-480424-0, $0.18 each.

In Mate-N-Lok Contacts, there are several choices.  Check out:
A1423-ND, Socket, 24-18AWG, tin finish, Amp 60617-1, $0.101 each.
A1433-ND, Socket, 24-18AWG, gold finish, Amp 60617-5, $0.967 each.
A1421-ND, Socket, 20-14AWG, tin finish, Amp 60619-1, $0.101 each.
A1435-ND, Socket, 20-14AWG, gold finish, Amp 60619-5, $0.967 each.

The old Seagate manual recommended 14AWG wire.  But modern disk
drives need a whole lot less current.
