Is anyone else having problems sourcing these I2C 2k x 8 eeproms? We are
getting information that Microchip have die problems in manufacture. Does
anyone *recommend* an alternative supplier? There are several but I would
appreciate a recommendation.

We had horrible problems with Atmel.  I un-recommend them.

Dunno if this'll help but I've started replacing serial EEPROM with
drop-in equivalent FRAM, which has several advantages in my
applications - particularly write speed and device life.

It may not be entirely suitable depending on your application as,
although it has a huge lifetime compared to EEPROM (1Gig+ R/W cycles
claimed), reads have the same effect as writes on the life of the device
(I belive it does a refresh write after each read).
That's not a problem for me 'cos I need to read it less often than
writing.

Have a look at http://www.ramtron.com anyway.
