So mars used to have water and maybe a biosphere, and it all went away.

Mars has two moons, whose orbit is decaying significantly.

What if it used to have a third moon, which decayed long ago.

Dya suppose that might have had a terminal impact on things?

Just wondering.

Have you read Niven's "Rainbow Mars" ?

Recommended.  Old-style Niven, though not my favorite sub-genre thereof.

I used to read a lot of sci-fi. Lucifer's Hammer was a good
one (Niven / Pournelle). I can still remember many scenes
after 30 years

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucifer%27s_Hammer

I also had a hankering for EE Smith's series, esp Skylark and
Lensman

Re-reading them now I may find gaping plot and technological
holes

Always liked the cover art on sci-fi books, some would make
great posters or jigsaws

It's been a long time, maybe that's where the idea got into my head,
but it popped out when I was looking at those new pictures of phobos.

Plot summary: the reason Mars looked like it had canals in early
observations was that it DID.  However, the giant skyhook that was
growing there used it all up, and now
it's coming to earth.  Or something like that.
