'[OT] Looking for a 7-seg display'

I'm looking for a 3-digit 7-seg display with a 0.3" character height  or greater, but with a package size no greater than ~1"W x ~0.5"H.   Thickness (height above PCB) of display is not important.   Through-hole (as SMD displays don't seem to work in this case).  Red  color, though it would be nice if also available in other colors with  the same pinout.  CC preferred, though I can work with CA.

Currently I'm using 3 single-digit displays (LSHD-A103), but the  pin-count is eating up PCB space and threatening me to go to a 4-layer  PCB (which I really want to avoid).

Any sources?  So far I've not found anything suitable thru Digikey,  Mouser, or SunLED.

Thanks,
-Neil.

Nothing suitable there -- all of Kingbright's displays seem to have a  considerably large package size relative to the digit size.  And I'm  still quite convinced that Kingbright is in cohorts with SunLED, as  their datasheets, specs, etc are almost identical.

Thanks,
-Neil.

Have you come across Forge-europa in the UK? These ones seem close to what you're asking except slightly over 0.5" high.

Fails the .5" height coming in at 13mm (0.512"). But meets the rest of
your requirements.

So, if no "proper" solution presents itself, you could consider
mounting the displays on a daughter board, combining whatever tracks
your drive scheme allows, and then connecting to main PCB with header
or pins or whatever.

Dimensionally, if the existing displays meet your size requirement and
if height above PCB is unconstrained, this gives you an ideal
solution. Suboptimal in other respects though.

But may allow more optimal tracking on the main PCB by being able to
have connections from piggy back display board come down at suitable
places - they don't all have to be in a row on the edge ...

This is actually beautiful!  By "height", I meant height above the  PCB, which is 5mm here, so it looks like it will work beautifully.

Thanks,
-Neil.
