Is anyone aware of a rugged, outdoor-viewable laptop or similar, with
touchscreen?

We've been looking here, but everything comes up as a dead end.

I do mean one that actually works with a given linux distro, not  a "probably".

Nokia N770 or N800?

Depending on your definition of rugged.  :)  May be too small for your
uses, but the screen has fantastic resolution.

Or maybe the OLPC, although it's not generally available right now.
It has 2 modes, B&W high contrast for outdoor use, colour for indoor
lower light conditions.

Oops, my mistake, the OLPC doesn't have a touchscreen.

Hmm.. Any idea on horsepower?  The app has to do some image
manipulation in realtime

It is an ARM processor, and can handle MPEG video playback.  I have
only used one for about 5 minutes, although I have a lot of experience
with the display and graphics controller. ;-)

Crappy video, annoying music, but a good example of how it works:

Looking further, it's 330 MHz for the N800, which is probably not
going to cut it for this application.

Damn, it's tempting, but underpowered.

Depending on how much work you can afford to do, you could write
acceleration routines to be done in the onboard DSP.

It's a fun little gadget, the folks at Nokia sent us an N800 back in
February, to test their CarMan software with our scan tool:

The screen is definitely NOT sunlight readable.

Hello,

look at the Panasonic Toughbook series. They will do it. They are not
cheap, however.

Imre

Be warned, they are not as tough as claimed.
