I'm about to buy a book on "serial port complete" from Jan Axelson... this name is not strange to me. Is he an "habitue" of this list?

On the same note, do you know this book? I want to learn RS-485, any other recomendations?
(I am actively searching the web and I've already ordered a couple of rs485 transceivers to do practical examples, but I like books)

Not that I'm aware of. And she's a lady person

Her free pdf articles on RS485, for example, have been very helpful

Jan is a she actually. Anyway, you may want to check out Serial
Communications by Roger Stevens (http://www.sq-1.com/sctoc.html). It
used to be called Serial PIC'n for those curious.

I was going to query whether Jan was in fact a woman, as many names
that sound female to NZ and UK ears are in fact men's names. There
have been some embarrassments on this list for this reason when people
assumed a person was a woman based solely on their name. eg One list
member (last posted August last year) is a Spaniard named Joan ( =
John) and someone here once started referring to him as her.

However, a Google revealed that Jan's name is Janet Louise Axelson, so
I'll happily concede your assertion for the purposes of this
discussion.

Padu,

Perhaps you were thinking of Bob Axtell?  :)

Jan(et) Axelson has written a number of technical books in this
general area.

I have it in my library. I find it to be useful.

She posts (or has posted) to Usenet.  Either comp.arch.embedded or
sci.electronics.design--I don't recall.

I find it interesting that I, being from the United States, also made
the assumption that Jan would be a man's name even though I would
otherwise consider it a common woman's name.  Interesting that it
seemed more likely to be a German man than a woman.  Too few women in
this hobby/line-of-work, it seems.

I have her "Serial Port Complete" (PDF Format) and like it. I like
her writing style, but then again I've been reading her articles for
at least 10 years. She does post in comp.arch.embedded at times. Also
I've seen a couple of her articles in Circuit Cellar lately.

Yes, I know.  :)  When Padu said that the name sounded familiar and asked if
she's a frequent poster on this list, I immediately thought of Mr. Axtell
due to the (debatable) similarity of their last names.
