That may be a later attempt, but they did an attempt with a version of the
386 chip as well. Cannot remember the number that they gave it, but it did
not have the 16 bit modes in it at all, started straight into 32 bit mode,
but was otherwise identical to the i386 chip. Alas it also did not catch on
