Post by thread:[OT] IE7 versus IE6, at least something is better

The company IT still blocks IE7 at work and I did not update IE6 to IE7 at home until recently at home. I find several good improvements of IE7 over IE6. Firstly I no longer have super-slowaccess to FTP site. It is now comparable to Firefox in this front. Secondly, it now works better with the new interface of Windows Live Hotmail (was Hotmail or MSN Hotmail). Tabbed browsing may be another one and I started to use Tab browsing now (but still use new window from time to time). One could say that Firefox already has some features earlier and is said to be "more secure" but personally I prefer to use IE under Windows as it seems faster over my Internet connection (8Mbps Cable Modem). I write this in Opera mailer i try, which is interesting as it handles the mail in a database and the "folders" are viewports to mails that fits that viewport criterias. Opera is great, the only problem is that it strictly follows the w3c.orgwhile too many sites follows microsoft.com. Firefox has no problem with those sites (or much less) while Opera is still struggling. Anyway, I love the mail client inside Opera, I was using that a lot with an IMAP server. The reason is I am not using that anymore is that because a) using Gmail; b) the corporate firewall does not let me going out with IMAP, POP3 and SMTP protocols. I still found Safari as the fastest browser, however, it's a bit of shame that they make a Windows but not a Linux client. It makes pages with lots of small images much faster to load.

I installed Opera under Linux when I was having problem with Firefox. Since I am using Gmail, many programs become useless to me (Outlook Express, Evolution). Occassionaly I will use Thunderbird to read Newsgroup. I do not have a Mac but I tried Safari once under Windows and it was very slow (that was a beta version though). Anyway, I will use IE and Firefox under Windows and Firefox under Linux based on my criteria of using no-cost software under Linux/Windows. 1st choice: OS built-in, supported and usable 2nd choice: freely available from the OS vendor, supported and usable 3rd choice:from 3rd party, open source, easily to be built from source 4th choice: from 3rd party, open source, not so easily built from source so will have to use the binary package 5th choice: from well-known 3rd party, closed source 6th choice: from less-well-known 3rd party, closed source, but with good review Under Windows, IE is 1st choice, Firefox is 3rd/4th (I've built Firefox from source under FreeBSD), Opera is 5th choice. Apple may be 5th or 6th since their Windows offerings are often bloated and not well behaving under Windows (Quicktime and iTune). Under Linux, Firefox is No 1 choice and Opera is still 5th choice. Typically on Saturday and Sunday morning, I've very fast internet connection since not many people are using them. After 11:00am, the speed goes down. The speed limit of PIClist.com seems to set to too low. I just clicked several posts in sequence and the site warns me that I am requesting the site too fast. This happens with both IE7 and Firefox/Fastfox (without turning on the fast prefetching option and use only the "optimized" option). Xiaofan

The 2nd test with Microchip forum proves that Firefox is still problematic with that site. The major problem is sometimes the cursor is missing in the Text input box. Take note this only happens under Windows Firefox. Under Linux I have no problem using Firefox with Microchip Forum. And it just caused flicking display with one of the forum thread. I think this is not a problem of Fastfox since Firefox has had this problem before. I understand that this may not be a problem with Windows Firefox but with Microchip's lousy forum software. Still this is a problem for me since I use Microchip Forum quite often. Occassionly I will still use Firefox under Windows (sometimes IE7 has problem with a site but Firefox is ok) but I think I will keep using IE7 mainly. I just googled "firefox cursor missing" and it seems to be a common problem with Firefox. Xiaofan

If not for this bug, I actually prefer to use Firefox with Microchip forum due to the built-in spelling checker. I have to install ieSpell add-on for IE7 in order to use the spelling checker. I use Gmail regularly with Firefox and IE. Since it has built-in spelling checker, so IE is not a problem here. But Firefox does have an edge with AdBlocker when using with Gmail. Xiaofan
