'[OT] How to send PIC data a short distance by radi'

I need to send a short serial message over a distance of about 100 meters by
radio.
The message is only generated a few times an hour in response to a
real-world event.
Neither speed mor "life or death" accuracy is an issue.
I am hoping someone can suggest an inexpensive "off the shelf" hardware for
this.
This is a USA application, and avoiding licensing hassles would be a big
plus.
Thanks,

Plenty of short-medium range FM transmitters/receivers to build at

http://sm0vpo.com/index.htm

as well as a lot of other useful info.

Sorry for previous bad address, missed a bit out in the middle. Dave's
Homebrew page for small radio transmitters and receivers (and other
gadgets) to build is actually

http://sm0vpo.8m.com/index.htm

worth a look.

I checked out this guys page.  I'm not much up on analog/RF stuff and can't
see me using any of these circuits to have a couple of PICs exchange data.

Is there anything simpler that can be constructed at home?  The other
alternative would be to buy and Rx/Tx module set.  But if size is a
concern.......

I don't think you're going to find anything much simpler for a tunable
transmitter, maybe a one-transistor job, but if you have the ability to
make that, you'd be able to make a slightly more complex one. As
far as the receiver goes, you could always buy a cheap pocket radio
off the shelf for next to nothing.

I'm sure you could get a FM Radio Microphone kit from an electronics
retailer. Our local (NZ, Dick Smith Electronics) has a simple, reliable,
stable transmitter that's well worth the money ($24.95). I've made up a few
with no problems. When over-driven with pulses rather than voice they'll
do 100m easily.
