Use Linux

There's my post of the day. Please feel free to flame each other over
the operating system wars. I'm not saying windows sucks. I'm just
saying Linux is far superior.

You make perfect sense. Whenever a window breaks and it gets really chilly,
adopt a penguin or several and have them live in the room that cannot be heated
anymore.

Brilliant advice as always from you.
Only one slight problem, maybe that works for you, but I need to make
money to pay my mortgage feed my Dog and Cat, oh and also get some money
to keep the wife happy, hence I can not just change operating system
which I have been using for the past 20 years. So yes I would love to
get shot of windows and change to use Linux but the learning curve is
large, and in the middle of all the things I want/need to learn is not a
big priority.
Please do not ignore the flaws that Linux also has, like ever changing
Kernell and possible change or not of device drivers.
I have a friend which is a very good programmer and uses Linux to make a
lot of money and when I talk to him it seems that he as similar problems
with it as I have with windows. He is an experienced software/hardware
Engineer with, I am sure, many more years of experience with Linux than
you, and he finds many problems with it that cost him productivity and
hence money.
I love what Linux represents but I can see the downsides. I will
eventually use more and more Linux but at this moment I am more
productive in windows, and I use it every day indirectly to make money,
I am not defending it, but would be hypocritical of me to criticise it
to much.
Far superior perhaps, I would say at this point that aims at a slight
different market. Potential to be a great OS definitely.
Just my post of the day...
Best Regards
               Luis

In terms of....? Is it the "My car is bigger, better and faster than yours"
flame?

BTW: Eliminating one problem by introducing many others does not seem to be
a good idea to me. (And I am telling you this while typing on an
Ubuntu...and having 10+ yrs experience on Unix/Linux)

Flaming those who post religious stuff is much more fun.

Must be about time for the annual 'Year Of the Desktop' announcement, that
seems to have been happening from almost before you were born.  How time
flies.

The most amusing 'look how easy it is to use' I've seen was on the back of a
demo CD from SCO.  (Remember them?  No, not them, the other SCO AKA
Tarantula.)  On the back it had loading instructions for a dozen or so
*nixes, a few lines for each detailing the various flavours of 'mount' etc.

It would work under Windows too.  The instructions?

"Place CD in drive."

ubuntu is the "userfriendly" linux with the most problems. Use debian stable
and you won't have nearly as many issues as on windows... not even close

Ok, so maybe we should steer this discussion towards the distro wars
instead...

Actually, In my job for the ISP, we use FreeBSD (my choice - being CTO
has it's advantages), but we're mainly just running mail and web, dns,
and a few other servers.  In fact, we don't have a single Windows box on
the server side.   Lots of XP on the desktop though.   We do have some
CentOS penguins running as well for Asterisk.

In my experimenting on the Linux desktop side, I've always just run
ubuntu, ever since I started using it as a result of it coming "out of
the box" with EMC2...  I really like how it just installs and works on
most hardware.   I also like wubi to get it going on a windows box.
But I also haven't been paying attention to the other distros either
since I discovered ubuntu.

So, tell me about the out-of-the-box debian experience...
