Hi all,
I have a friend interested in buying this CRO on eBay. He is not really
sure how much it is worth though. I was hoping some of you guys might have
some idea.

As far as dollars, I can't say, but I use a TDS-420A (with enhanced math waveforms and waveform output to disk drive) and it's my right hand.  I love it.
If you get it, order some replacement encoders for the scrollers. There are four, all the same part. Surprisingly inexpensive.

Mine failed one afternoon, and I was essentially unable to use the scope for a couple days till the encoders arrived. Big plus, they plug in. I paid more for shipping, than the encoders.

Other than that, I've had no problems, and nothing but praise.

You're not doing him any favo(u)rs by distributing the eBay listing
to a mailing list with 100's of recipients, unless he's actually selling it!

From the previous couple that have sold, it is worth about AUD 950.00
in the US (between 650 and 680 US), so the AUD1380+ (there are now two guys
apparently willing to bid 1350+ with 2 days to go, so it's unlikely it will
go for less than 1400-1500) sounds  a bit on the dear side to me.  Depends on
how much he wants/needs it, of course, but note that the seller does not
accept Paypal, which adds to the buyer's risk (and cost) and his feedback
is . On the plus side, he does offer right of return (but I'd expect that
anyhow).

On the negative side, he doesn't have much feedback, has bought/sold mostly
unrelated items from what I can see. What feedback there is, is good though.

Again, not exactly the same thing, but I paid $3200 for mine, several years ago.

It was an ebay purchase, I drove up to a gas station in Michigan, and made the exchange at about midnight.  This was several hours drive, but worth it.
I felt better bringing it home myself, than having it shipped.

I guess the new DPO scopes are eating it's lunch, but I still like my scope a lot, and I wouldn't trade it.

Yeah I though of that already but figured it was worth the risk since a
large percentage of the ppl here are from the US and surrounds and this item
is only offered to Australasia.

I am in AU (so is my friend) so lack of PayPal is not much of a problem.
Thankyou for your comments on the price, I will pass them on. My friend is
a seasoned eBayer and I'm sure he will take all the appropriate steps before
handing over any cash.

It's not so much of a problem, but it's that paying with Paypal or with
a credit card to the seller's merchant account provides you with some
consumer protection in case the buyer is a complete crook and disappears
into the night with the money, shipping a box of bricks or nothing at all.

I assume we don't have a complete monopoly on such types of people on
this side of the big pond. ;-)

are you talking about rotary shaft encoders?  if so i assume they are
using the switch type rather than the optical type that last forever,
but cost a lot ($70 at digikey if i recall).  still, if it's not too
hard it might be worth going to the optical type, assuming you didn't
have to do much redesign which you might, particularly on something like
a scope.  i love those rotary encoders to death!
