Can anyone tell me what this ruler is for

http://home.clear.net.nz/pages/joecolquitt/ruler.gif

I picked it up in a stationer's because it's stiff aluminium and
has inches and cm. Oh, and it was dirt cheap and not plastic

The only side that is truly 12 inches is the 1/16th inches, which
is also the longest

Others are

1:100 (cm)  0-30
1:200  0-60
1:250  0-75
1:300  0-90
1:400  0-120

I'm sure these scales have some absolutely wonderful uses. If I
knew what they were (nothing at all on the wrapper). Is this a
draughtsman's or architect's scaling ruler or something like that ?

How can I use it with a PIC ? (poking or threatening misbehaving
circuits maybe)

It looks like an architects triangular scale.  I once owned a drawing
set by Faber Castell that included one.

I remember it being useful when I made exploded view drawings of
mechanical parts while in school.

Metal!  Nice.  I've got a plastic one.  It's for taking measurements off
scaled drawing, like house blueprints, machinery, maps etc as you suspect.
Beats figuring out the ratios in your head.  You'll usually find one buried
in the bottom of builders & engineers toolboxes.

Yours isn't real good for maps unless it's a really big map (or a really
small area).  Well, just multiply by 100 or so.  No metric mm/cm scale kinda
sucks though.

You can get them as 'normal' rulers too.  The one I've got here has 1:20,
1:200, 1:50, 1:500, 1:1 (duh), 1:5, 1:10 & 1:100.  Each edge has 2 scales.
Heh, found it on Google, "Staedtler 56170" -
http://www.draftex.com.au/CScales.html, along with a bunch of other,
including triangular.

Sorry, didn't notice you said it had metric on it.  Bonus!

It's a "scale rule", used for drawing and measuring from scale drawings.  Architects and the like use them all
the time (or they do when drawing on paper as opposed to using software to do it!).

{Quote hidden}

Yup!  You choose the scale that fits the paper nicely then use that side to draw your plans, reading off the
measurements (or powers of ten up and down from that) directly.  My father was a partner in a building firm
(decades ago) and used one of these for drawing site plans, although his wasn't triangular but flat like a
normal ruler.

Well as it's metal it would make a good short-circuit-protection tester!  :-)

You make a lot of us feel really old. I have a couple of those in the box
with my Gramercy drafting instruments and my Dietzgen Log-Log-Decitrig Slide
rule.
