'[OT] Digikey > Mouser ?'

I few months ago, I placed an order with Digikey and realized I had not ordered enough of a certain PIC.  I called them and was told my order was being processed in the warehouse at that moment but they would transfer me to the person working on the order.  The person I was transferred to said my box was in front of him and he'd add the uCs.  Pretty impressive.

Fast forward to last night.  I ordered a large number of components from Mouser including 3x CR1225 batteries.  The product page for the batteries says they must be shipped via ground transportation but does not say anything about a HAZMAT fee.  In fact, I didn't see mention of a $25 HAZMAT fee until they sent my order confirmation email and the fee is little more than a footnote.

I called Mouser at 7am MST, which I hoped was well before the order shipped..  They informed me that my order has not shipped but my credit card has been authorized so they cannot change a line item, cannot cancel the order, and could not confirm or deny that I'll be paying a $25 HAZMAT fee for a couple coin batteries.

I order from both Mouser and Digikey regularly.  This is my first negative experience with Mouser but it's also my first order that required any customer service.  Now I think I'll stick with Digikey when possible.

Thanks for the warning! I was about to place an order that includes a
BR2032. If this is going to be a problem I'll just special order it
from the local battery store.

When I recently ordered batteries from Digikey I did it on the telephone
so I could query them about the ins and outs and choose the correct way.
The order shipped UPS Ground and there was no service charge. The order
was recent but it was not in 2011 so I don't know if anything has
changed for the new year.

Friendly regards,

Bob

Attached is a screenshot of the notice from my order confirmation.  The line item for the CR1225s referenced footnote #4 and had a hazmat icon.

Just received the shipping confirmation.  At the bottom it has the same footnotes (#1-3) minus #4.  Usual ground shipping fee was added but hazmat fee was not.  I don't mind the order confirmation making a mistake, but the CSRs should have been able to address this, either by letting me know the hazmat fee wouldn't be charged or by being able to cancel line items/full orders.

I've never had too many real problems with Mouser or Digikey. I
ordered a few dozen large lithium coin cells last year and didn't have
any issues at all (from Digikey)
I like Mouser's packaging mildly better, and perhaps many times they
beat Digikey on small quantities but I usually buy stuff by the
tens/20s/100s and not 2 or 3 at a time.
There's no reason to run out of resistors, ever. You can buy reels of
0603 resistors for $7.. the problem is more where to store all of
them.

They are allowed to ship those batteries by air (as opposed to airing them
by ship?).
There are standard IATA and ICAO exemptions in effect and documents that
tell how they should be packed.
Fedex and others have produced lightly edited versions of the official
guidelines.
