Can a caravan be self propelled? ala "motorhome"/"winnebago" (sic?)

No, a caravan is always towed. I believe the word originates from the gypsy
type van towed by a horse, but must also be related somehow to having a
"mobile tent" being carried across a desert by camel - remember a string of
camels on a desert trek is also a caravan (also used when going on safari in
the African bush).

A self propelled one is a motorhome, although a small one may be called a
camper, but this would tend to be limited to ones the size of a pickup
chassis. anything in the 3 ton and up categories will be a motorhome pretty
well without exception AFAIK.

I remember spending 10 minutes trying to translate a word for a relative
only to discove the Russian/Latvian/slang phrase for pickup truck IS
"pickup truck" :)
