'[OT] Bye Bye Gmail running out of space'

Hi folks I'm running out of storage space (>7GB) on my Gmail account.
Regrettably the tools to manage my account and select all mails before a
certain date for example seem to not exist...

over the last few day I have downloaded all my 7GB using a program called
"Gmail Backup'
Now I'm going to try to see if I can delete all the >142000 messages at the
same time to get a fresh start.

If anybody knows some tricks that would be interesting!

Thanks

Use Pop and delete the emails from the server.

Use an IMAP client, you can do all your filtering and everything in the
client and it will delete them on the gmail server.

I believe using IMAP will not delete the emails from the Gmail
server but rather keep them in the server. I believe that
POP3 access is the correct way.

That depends on how you have the IMAP client set up, on my phone I have
it set to "move to server trash", which indeed moves the messages to the
trash. The other option is "delete them from the server", sounds pretty
obvious and final from the description!! :)

I suppose if I did this from the beginning and always popped off all the
mail from the gmail server it could work, but I am concerned that popping 7
GB might be too much for the client?

Is there any client you recommend and that also manages the folding of
threads like Gmail does it?

'Gmail Backup' is nice in the way that it can selectively backup from a date
to a date (http://www.gmail-backup.com/)
Then I compress the year segments and file them... or if I get a new hard
disk I  might put it all in one folder and seartch it if needed!
I haven't really checked if attachments come down correctly though!

With pop this should be no issue right?

As far as I know there is a policy saying that you are not supposed to used
GMAIL for backup purposes, and that they can remove the account doing this
so. I think it is cheap enough to buy 1TB of external HD...

I second that. Use thunderbird with Gmail IMAP (do NOT use outlook, it
is slow with Gmail) and filter/manage your email from there.

Did you know that you can purchase more space?
https://www.google.com/accounts/PurchaseStorage

I would not recommend continually using more storage for the long term though.
Do you really need to keep all 7GB? It's a problem finding time to go
through and delete all the old unimportant stuff though...

You can accomplish this in Gmail's standard Web UI, you don't need to
use an external client. Just click Select: All then a link will show
up right below that says "Select all conversations that match this
search". Click that, then click Delete.
