Is it just me or is anyone else getting black subject lines and part of
the email header in the main body of the message? I've checked at the
(my) server end and it seems fine apart from an extra line and a tab
character after the X-Hops line.

One of the knackered posts is quoted below. Everything else seems to be
coming through fine - just the PICList. Weird...

It's been mentioned before but have a look at the X-Port.

The ..Snip thing that I was seeing, is a new feature in eudora, active by default (mistake!) called the "content concentrator".

It seems a bit ill conceived, as it concentrated the content right out of many messages. Also, it's not obvious that it's your mail client doing this.
It didn't happen right away when I switched programs, but that was because I didn't get any emails that it felt like concentrating for me.

I've just had a quick check of the list configuration and everything
appears to be normal.  Let me know if it continues and I'll check
further.  I'm hoping that it's just a glitch at MIT!

As of 2:15 Eastern Time US the messages are still coming through without
subject lines and with LOTS of header information at the top.

I haven't seen anything like this from the piclist, all day.
I get my email through my server at dvanhorn.org, I assume the piclist sends it there directly.

This message came through ok on the Piclist Dan although I'm still getting
messages through with no subject etc.

The earliers message I have received that has come through in the correct
format arrived at 19:46 GMT. I've had 2 messages (including yours) in the
correct format since then and 2 messages with the message header in the body
(make that 3 now - just had one through from Howard Winter !!!)

Cheers
Dom

It seems to be clearing up now, if this goes through ok.
Probably just a list server glitch or setting foul-up.

Part of Message source that does not have the problem

Part of message source of message that has the problem (note the blank line
between "x-topics:" and "subject" microsoft outlook express interprets the
blank line as start of body text. All messages that exhibit the problem have
this blank line in front of the subject line in common! look at it in
outlook express by selecting the message , then file, property's, details,
message source.

The first blank line has been the demarcation between an
email's header portion and the body portion for decades.

As far back as August 13, 1982 -- RFC 822, Standard For The
Format Of ARPA Internet Text Messages -- said

 3.1.  GENERAL DESCRIPTION

A message consists of header fields and, optionally, a body.
The body is simply a sequence of lines containing ASCII characters.
It is separated from the headers by a null line  (i.e., a line with
   nothing preceding the CRLF).

So now someone needs to find out why null lines are being
arbitrarily inserted in the header portion of messages.

Further back than that.  It's the same format used in the pre-tcp
days, more or less.  That would have been RFC733.TXT

> So now someone needs to find out why null lines are being

Eh.  We added the X-topics field (?), and it turns out that both the
topic
passed in and the whole field have newlines at the end.  So you get an
extra newline that breaks off the headers from the text..

     fprintf(out, "X-topics: %s\n", "[OT]\n");
or equivilent.  Obvious :-)

Interestingly, My mac's mail.app isn't having any problems with the
discontiguous headers.  Both display and sorting into the "Piclist"
(which I have based on "to:" field) are working fine.  I wonder if
that's a feature, or a bug?

Features...   Bugs...   Aren't they one and the same thing when it comes
to programming? (Especially if it's commercial and you can't figure out
why it's happening!)
