I have some comparison information related to the cost of getting started
with a uC at
http://techref.massmind.org/cheapucs
that may be of interest.

I'd love to hear comments, corrections and other suggestions about that
page.

That really depends on what you want to prototype.  The question you are asking
is lacking in information.

If you are a person who is thinking about getting into microcontrollers, and you
want to know which MCU to start out with, without any specific project in mind,
then I would suggest you start with a 16F873.  It has just about everything you
would need on an mcu, and it is reprogrammable without an eprom eraser.

I consider it, at this time, to be the best micro the average experimenter could
start out with.  You can get it for about $10 [US], and cheap programmers will
be out which you can build for less than a few dollars soon.

I hope this answers your question.  If not, try rephrasing it with more
infomation as to what you intend to use the micro for (just to play with, to
learn about micros, for a robot project, etc)

No such thing.
Every application has different commercial and technical requirements,
so different solutions will be optimal in each case - I'm currently
working on a  product which contains 2 AVRs and a PIC!

20 bucks for a H8/300L !!

I'm getting Flash version of the H8/3644 (32k Flash, 4k RAM)
for only US$6, OTP about US5+ and the masked ROM version
is only US$1.3

Quantity of 1k and above helps though.

Rgds,
Peter Tiang

Short asian redheads that love to cook and clean.  Must like monster truck
rallies; must be good with soldering iron (to do my re-work for me), etc...
