One of my BCCs replied as follows. He copied it to the list (which will bounce) so he doesn't mind it being public but I won't identify him. He makes solar products in China for sale in the US and imports and sells PV panels from China now. Opinions are his based on what he knows - I just pass them on. Rumor has it that the US is going to implement a HUGE tariff on china panels coming up…not sure if its just hear say as well…..but since America cant make panels at reasonable prices apparently someone in the govnt plans to screw everyone importing them… So if you can get cheap get them! Most panels range about .50-.75 cents/watt in qtys like this so price according or you can buy new from china at these prices in these qtys! Also just spoke to one of Chinas LEADING solar companies…..HE IS GETTING OUT!!! Yes this was six months ago and he is jumping ship! I asked why, he said the market is headed south and US imports and industry for large panels is coming to an end…. Also he said that 5 of chinas LARGEST PV makers are going to GO BANKRUPT within the year before 2013 and there is no margin for the factories anymore selling at these prices OTHER than the china govnt giving them subsidies which heavily relies on their connection to their local govnt man… Long story short 2012 is the SOLAR PANEL DUMPING YEAR!!! To give you an idea of how fast prices have dropped the $/w has dropped about 30% in less than a year! Crazy! And has dropped another 10% in the past 3-months! And this is for small panels EG 10-40w size…larger ones even more… Just a heads up may seem like a great deal but beware better deals are forthcoming…

One of my BFFs replied as follows: German companies as well as others are accusing China of illegal subsidies of solar panel manufacturers. Your friend has made money off it. And that profit center for him may dry up. Maybe he can invest in America now. My BFF's opinion - I just pass it on. He said that 5 major Chinese PV companies are liable to go bankrupt in the next year and that political largesse from the local party man is all that is keeping them alive thus far. Your BFF (bicycle film festival?) seems to think they are well informed of the mix and nature of the business concerned. Their prescience fails them. I am not involved in the company concerned except as a designer of some of their product, but my perception is that on a per product$ basis they would rank from far, to far-far ahead of, eg the recently much maligned Apple, oft maligned (rightly or no) Walmart and many many others. And no doubt well ahead of most German companies in this context, through no fault of their own. They contribute to both US incomes and to lower paid Chinese workers incomes in a manner which overall seems likely to be socially acceptable to many. Whatever. The key observation the BCC made is perhaps whether at this late state in the cycle, import tariffs are a viable way to address an already fatally flawed situation. Possibly having the US government buy up Chinese PV factories in anticipation of the next part of the inevitable cycle may be a better response? (Just joking, but ... ). The post was NOT intended to be US knocking or government knocking or party political or whatever. I could have edited out all the non PC stuff but raw value would also be lost. The PV industry worldwide is in a downturn. International politics have helped deepen the trough.
