I have heard of LINUX and some of the other languages in this article,
but never "LUNIX".
Here is a link to the article. subject 8 is the one discussing LUNIX.

It sounds like the author of this article knew just enough to be dangerous.

"There are, unfortunately, many hacking manuals available in bookshops
today. A few titles to be on the lookout for are: "Snow Crash" and
"Cryptonomicon" by Neal Stephenson; "Neuromancer" by William Gibson;
"Programming with Perl" by Timothy O'Reilly; "Geeks" by Jon Katz; "The
Hacker Crackdown" by Bruce Sterling; "Microserfs" by Douglas Coupland;
"Hackers" by Steven Levy; and "The Cathedral and the Bazaar" by Eric S.
Raymond."
ROFL!
But I have to admit: a good list of books to consider for your
computer-savvy kid!

Not that much. Here's the whole section:
---------------------------------
8. Is your son obsessed with "Lunix"?
BSD, Lunix, Debian and Mandrake are all versions of an illegal hacker
operation system, invented by a Soviet computer hacker named Linyos
Torovoltos, before the Russians lost the Cold War. It is based on a program
called "xenix", which was written by Microsoft for the US government. These
programs are used by hackers to break into other people's computer systems to
steal credit card numbers. They may also be used to break into people's
stereos to steal their music, using the "mp3" program. Torovoltos is a
notorious hacker, responsible for writing many hacker programs, such as
"telnet", which is used by hackers to connect to machines on the internet
without using a telephone.
---------------------------------
The problem is that this diatribe sounds convincing enough that someone who
doesn't know better may believe it. FUD includes
1. Linux not Lunix
2. Not illegal OS.
3. Linux Torvolds not Linyos Torovoltos, whose Finnish.
4. Break into peoples steros?
5. Telnet as a hacker program?
I think my head is going to explode!

I guess that he's missing only "Illuminati" and the job would be
complete :-))

This sounds to me more like a parody (portraying exactly those that know
just enough to be dangerous :) than something serious.

I first saw this years ago in COLA (comp.os.linux.advocacy a USENET
group for fanaticists ;-)
I heard somewhere that it started as a satire and that some kooky soccer
mom ran accross it and took it as gospel. I don't know how much truth
there is to that, but it sounds plausable.

This thing is brilliantly funny, ROLF indeed!
"...he may be using it to DOS other peoples sites. DOSing involves
gaining access to the "command prompt" on other people's machines, and
using it to tie up vital internet services. ..."

I would say it is a piece of irresponsible satire, if it has started as one.
For people who know this it is a ROFL, but for a "normal" people there are too
many things to catch their attention as true and enaugh things to scare.
Classical tactic used in politics and advertising: Gain trust (in this cas: Is
your son becoming argumentative and surly in his social behaviour? - Of course,
he is becoming a teenager!!) show a link to an enemy (the word hacker had a lot
of bad press recently. Hacker who is using Lunix developed by a Soviet spy is
even scarier), show impact for the reader (your son will go to prison!), and
call for action.

This is almost as funny as the BOFH series of stories. All it needs
is an April 1st date!
I especially like his parting comment: "It cannot be taken too seriously."
Delicious satire indeed!

It starts off that way, but by the time you get to:
>> BSD, Lunix, Debian and Mandrake are all versions of an illegal
>> hacker operation system, invented by a Soviet computer hacker
>> named Linyos Torovoltos, before the Russians lost the Cold War.
>> It is based on a program called "xenix", which was written by

You know that the author is either WAY off in loony-ville, or has
his tongue firmly in his cheek.
Wikipedia has this this to say about the "original" web site:
>> Adequacy.org was a satirical web site. It featured articles on
>> politics, religion, technology, history, and sociology, as well
>> as the "Linux Zealot" cartoon series. The site shut down on
>> September 11, 2002, but has since made its archives available.

Whats even better is that according to Netcraft the server the article
is hosted on is running Linux (er, Lunix).
