I now this is really Way off Topic ! But it might be ok because is a
check for a Electronics project :-)
I received a check for a honorable mention at a Circuit Cellar contest
and I live in Brazil. I will be going to the USA for the Microchip Masters
and I would like to cash the check. I tried google but this is probably so
simple that I did not find any information :-) How do I do about this ? Do I
just walk in the bank show the Passport and receive the money ?? I am a
Brazilian citizen so I obviously do not have a driver's license or a social
security number..

When you go to Microchip Masters in the USA present your passport and the
address of the hotel/motel where you are staying. The check may take 3 or 4
business day to clear, but you should have no problem. If you have a credit
card it will also be helpful.

If you have the check now, you should be able to cash it at a bank near you.
If you will receive it in the USA, then you can follow my suggestion. I
don't think you will have any problem as long as the check is under
$10,000.00. The $10 K is the triggerpoint for investigation and special
consideration re forms, etc.

It is possible to cash a US check in a Brazilian bank. However, you will
have to pay a fee which varies a lot between banks. Generally it is in the
range of $30 to $100 (for smaller amounts).

with proper idendification. The bank will cash it.

Ouch, Russell.
Happy Monday morning to you, too.
;-)
When you come to the US, look up a Western Union office in the aread you're
staying. Bring the check, your passport, and any credit cards you may have in
case they want to see more identification. They'll cash the check for you for
a small fee. They may ask you to fill out some forms first, so that you're in
their system, but they'll cash it for you.
If you have an account in a Banco do Brasil, you can cash it there in
Brazil, as
pretty much every one of those is also a Western Union agency. Same small fee
applies.

Make sure your ID matches the check EXACTLY or they probably won't cash
it. Eg. a check made out to Jack XXXX rather than John XXXX or Barb YYYY
rather then Barbara YYYY could give you trouble.

your check, but........

Thanks :-) It was nice to participate.. Looking at the boards being
soldered in a Bread Toaster was much nicer than the us$250 that I won ;-)
Seeing my name at the Circuit Cellar magazine is also nice, I have to
admit...
