Hy List.
Is there somewhere a software to convert an Acrobat *.pdf into an Eagle file?
One can download pdf images of a PCB from the magasines' webs for free.
I'd like to convert them to Gerber or HPGL, prefferable by Eagle, to be
able to
add Excellon/NC for drilling.
Is that a stupid question?
Cristian.

There is a software from holophase, called circad that let's your draw
over scanned bitmaps. Not exactly what you want but maybe a way to get
there. The trial version is quite capable but will not generate gerbers
:-( The web is http://www.holophase.com . It is a very nice schematics and board
package, definitely the fastest one I have ever seen for windows. And the
learning curve is very smooth.

Actually not impossible, but probably extremely difficult and time consuming
to get usable results. First I guess you could do a screen copy of your .pdf
image and copy it into Paint. Then, software that converts from bitmap
format to vector format (e.g. .jpg to HPGL) does exist and I recently used a
program to do this that I got off the net - I think it was called KVEC or
something. Do a search for it.
It'll be very time consuming though and KVEC needed a lot of tweaking before
I got a satisfactory vector file from my bitmap image. And at the end of the
day you'll still just have a basic copper layer, i.e. without all the other
layers e.g. solder resist and so on. The file will probably be huuuuge too.
And it will probably still look nasty.
Then theoretically you could import this HPGL file into certain PCB packages
and then add your drill holes.
Personally I'd say don't bother... design a new PCB from scratch.
Maybe you could somehow 'trace' over the image using your PCB software
somehow.
It's useful to know that software like KVEC exists however, 'cos it's useful
for when you want to engrave a monochrome bitmap image onto a panel, or
something.

There are no stupid questions, especially here on the PIClist. I'm with
Trevor and Alexandre, try to draw it in Eagle. But you will have to pay
according to the following schedule:
PICLIST price list:
Answers to stupid questions: Free
Answers to dumb questions: Still Free
Answers to hard questions: Also Free
Answers to impossible questions: No Charge
Answers to more than one question per post: Bulk Discount
Snappy, glib, or flippant answers to serious questions: 100% discount on
usual prices
Correct Answers: Priceless

Is what you want to generate a simple excellon
drill (X/Y) list from a bitmap of a single-sided
PCB (copper) image??
It shouldn't be too hard to write a 2D graphic
program that will do that from any decent bitmap.
Can you email me the bitmap(s) and i'll have a play.
:o)

That should be added to the Pic List tea shirt! Or pictures or
suitably embarrassing project mistakes could be whizzed round the net
faster than an IBM rumour machine.

Using Adobe Acrobat 5 (full version) you can open the .pdf file and do a save as postscript (.ps) or encapsulated postscript (.eps). Perhaps one of these file types could be imported into the Eagle software.
good luck
