Hi all,

I have requested a sample from a manufacturer from China but the cost of
delivering it to my country is USD55 through DHL. That is extremely
expensive to me. The product itself cost USD38 and weight 3.5 kg.
Does anyone has any experience on any other cheaper alternatives? Should I
ask them to post it through their national courier instead? In addition,
what option do I have if I were to TT the money to them and not receiving
anything later on? Any feedback are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Best regards,
pang

Mail is the cheaper alternative, but many Far Eastern manufacturers use
the willingness to pay for a courier as a kind of filter to eliminate
people who are not serious about buying large quantities of product.

We just give them our Fedex account number. I've paid $50-$150 US for a few
"free" samples. It makes no real difference if you can meet their usual
minimum order quantities, and keeps the riff-raff away.

Seems like a reasonable cost - according to the USPS international calculator ircalc.usps.gov/speed.asp?Country=China&Pounds=7.7&Ounces=0&cmdSubmit=Continue&Contents=1
It would cost about the same to sent 3.5KGs to China.

Overnight shipping halfway around the world is exorbitant.  US Global
priority mail is cheaper, and a little slower, maybe the country of origin
has a similar service.  Regular post might be an option for anything that
is small enough.   But with regular post, you should add delivery
confirmation and insurance, which are automatically included in DHL or
Fedex.

Working with a company that has a US representative is the best option,
you can obtain samples directly from the US office and skip the expensive
air freight.  Unfortunately, this usually is not an option.

If you wire the money to the company, of course you are taking a risk.  I
assume you are doing business with them later, in volume?  If they want
your business, they will respond.  Or maybe they will have a nice dinner
on you, who knows?  Any international business transaction is fraught with
higher risks, and often higher rewards.

Sometimes we bundle shipments.  We recieve products from China regularly
by ship, and we will have extras or samples sent that way.   Unfortunately
it takes 3-4 weeks to get here, so it isn't convenient.   Other times, we
have people traveling in the area who hand carry samples back.

Called "Speedpost/EMS" in Asia. Xpresspost in Canada.

I recently discovered from How Much Is Inside (
http://www.cockeyed.com/inside/howmuchinside.html ) that a 40 foot
shipping container (such as one that goes by ship  on sea and trucks and
trains on land) is only $140 for four months, and only a few thousand to
ship to china and back.

It's a bit slower, but imagine the shopping spree you could go on in
China before filling one up!

You can even buy your own for under $2000 [US].  Maybe better than a
manufactured home when the tornados hit?

The specific container page is
http://www.cockeyed.com/inside/container/container.html .

Maybe, but just do not expect any shipping company to accept it for carriage
before or after the tornado. My understanding is they are sold off that
cheap because they are no longer certifiable for use :))

But they do make great storage boxes :))
