No need to get personal Bob. I'm just trying to reconcile my experience with what I hear from everyone else.

The ocasional server restart does not necessarily indicate that the server is vulnerable to external attack. It is true that NT boxes do seem to crash from time to time, but when I don't run wierd software and I get it set up right, they are quite good on uptime. Just between you and me, the delay code generator, given a certain set of parameters, will go into an infinate loop and the server takes a few seconds to kill it, so if a bunch of request come in for that exact same thing, (e.g. lots of refresh button pushing) the server will slow to the point that a few good searchs will bring it to a standstill. But that isn't NT's fault is it?

I do log my server failures:

Check out bugtraq at http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1
There is the top 20 security holes from the FBI & SANS Institute at
http://www.sans.org/top20/

Personally the most telling stat for me is the 176 from 35 machines Nimda probes
and the 184 from 119 CodeRed probes I've received in the last 50 days since I
rebuilt & reinstalled my FreeBSD stable world.
There would probably be more probes but every hour I have a cronjob that
blocks any IP that has probed me 10 or more times.

The biggest holes are in OutLook & IE.  One of the ActiveX controls has a hole
so big Microsoft recommended not trusting anybody including Microsoft.

Putting the : inside the [] IS acceptable (at least to the list server) and it avoids the problem of M$ Outhouse (see I can bash M$ too!) whacking off the tag when people reply.

And I do make mistakes... all the time... but I tend to forget them as I'm married and there is no point in two people keeping track of the same thing. <GRIN> I'm jokeing... my wife is very supportive.

The esteemed Mr Blick says "This isn't the first time you've dragged this FUD out, why do you continue to do it? Are you being paid to bash Linux?"

Just for the record... I am NOT being paid by anyone to bash anything. And as I said before, I really do support open source. Look at piclist.com for pete sake! Don't I do enough to promote open source?

If you want to find fault, look at my ego rather than my wallet: I don't understand how I could have had so many failures with *nix (even boxes I didn't admin) and so few failures with NT if the only difference was my brain as compaired to other, smarter, people who swear that the opposite is true. I want to believe that it is something other than lack of sense on my part that makes NT work better for me.

And finally, Bob, I don't like being accused of things like that. Especially not on a public list. That IS getting personal and I really would advise you to control yourself.

Oh, and I restarted the SQL server a bit ago so that I could install a new UPS on it. I think the old one may have been failing, I kept hearing the fan speed go up and down, and since the I put in the new one, it has been constant.

James, you may not be paid to do it, but you are trolling. Again.

In the past, when you've started the "MS vs Linux and I know personally
that Linux is buggy" topic you got away with it. This time I simply asked
you why you were doing it again. Considering Steve Ballmer's "we must not
lose against Linux at any price" I thought asking you if you were
compensated was a valid question.

I consider your threats to be way more personal than anything I said. Why
don't you just drop it. Your continued MS vs Linux posts are really not
needed and serve no useful purpose.

Cheerful regards,

Bob

Go further, all "MS vs Linux" thoughts should be considered
useless, needless and therefore harmful to the nation.
Freedom of speech, of thinking? - useless and needless
things.

He has an opinion based on his experience.

Here goes that famous quote from on of Voltaire's characters: I do not
aggree with you but I'd give my life to defend your right to say what you
think.  Or nearly so. The orignial is in French anyway. Happy now ?

Mike.

P.S. Regarding "Printer to PCB?" thread, I was told that
EPSON Stylus Photo 960 Printer prints just fine on a PCB
laminated with the LAMINAR DRY FILM  photoresist.
It has CD tray and uses pigmented inks (instead of more
common printer inks that contain organic dyes).

Aha, I see, it's a democrazy: everybody has right to
shut up everyone just being governed by his opinion,
based on his experience, of course.
