'[OT]: UV Erasers'

Hello,
I'm cosidering a design with one of the RF pics, since these are OTP, the
development would have to be on a windowed part and I would need an eraser.

Yeah I could just buy one..... And recomendations would be helpful.

But I was thinking that the new UV LEDs might be suitable for the task, has
anyone any experiance with this?
It seems to me that a UV LED, a little box (sample box from maxim maybee...)
a resistor and my bench power supply -- voila! Total cost les than $4

Thoughts?

Denny

Nope - UV LEDs have much too long a wavelength

What wavelength is actualy needed? At what intensity and time? Maybee
someone could point me towards somthing that details this information.
Thanks

Ok, scrap that idea.
What's everyone / anyone recommend for an inexpensive eraser?

I've got one and can say it works well, appears to be durable (I can't
say it is becuase I try to avoid abusing it, so I've never tested its
durability) and you can't really beat the price.

Buy an UV lamp and use the no-transformer-enhanced-plus-tabajara
schematic from Roman Black to drive it ;o)

Just don't forget to NEVER (hey boy, I said N E V E R) look at it when
turned on.

If I understand the response correctly regarding the Roman Black eraser (I
have not seen it personally), it sounds like it is not enclosed:

I love the spirit of DIY, but I cringe when I hear things like this...just
be careful...what if a youngster who does not know about the dangers of UV
plays with this and damages his or her eyes?

Buy a COTS UV eraser -- they have a safety mechanism (not fool-proof) to
prevent exposure. Or, go the extra mile to enclose the unit and build a
safety mechanism into it.

Best regards,

Ken Pergola

I was talking about the circuit, and not about the enclosure ;o)

Remember I told him to N E V E R look at the light of the lamp, when it
is turned on. It has the most beautiful blue bright light I've ever seen,
but it DOES (I said DOES DOES DOES DOES DOES!!) lots of harm to your eyes

Try 253nm 25mW/cm^2, 20 minutes. Beware these are not mchip figures, they
are for general EPROM erasing. It does not hurt to go to 100mW/cm^2. If
you think this is too much, the power per unit area is equivalent to
1kW/m^2 which is the total irradiation of the sun at noon (give or take a
little and not in UV but all wavelengths). This will likely not damage
anything (but use at your own risk ;-).
