'[OT]: Tek 453 O-scope manual'

Hey, folks!

Do any of you out there have an electronic version of the Tek 453 manual? If
not, do you have a paper one you'd be willing to give/sell me (starving
student, and all that...whine).

I just picked up a 453 on Ebay for $81... not a bad deal, at least for a
student-type scope - almost had it for $46, but the damned snipers drove it
up in the last few seconds.

Thanks for your help!

- Robert

Robert,

I have a manual but it's a bit large to copy, and we need to keep it as that's our business.  If you get it in and can describe any problems we can troubleshoot to a circuit, contact me off list and then I'll copy applicable sections of the manual.

Be very cautious, however, as this scope, actually the entire 45x and 42x series, has not been a catalog item for over 30 years.  They used standard transistors (unless you bought one of the old Nuvistor models) but mechanical parts like knobs have not been available for about 20 years.  If the CRT is bad, you've just bought a boat anchor.  Same goes for transformers and the like.

Be very careful of buying these old items on eBay.

Thanks! I appreciate the offer.

Fortunately, the seller (a guy with a good Ebay reputation) has guaranteed
that the 'scope will at least turn on and light up. Thus, the CRT and power
supply are good. AFAIK, the scope is a fully functioning unit, tho it may
need to be calibrated.

Thx for the advice... I was fairly careful in selecting one with pictures of
it working, and with a guarantee that it would turn on... 'course I'm a
total 'scope n00b, so there could still be problems. I'll tell ya how it
turns out. Can't wait for the UPS truck... <grin>

i doubt very much that you'll find an electronic version, since it was
pre-pdf and i doubt tech converted it since it was "obsolete".  you can
probably buy a manual from a used equipment or manual company, but it
may not be cheap.  are you talking about the operations manual or the
repair manual?  for operation just knowing/learning how to use a scope
and playing with it should do, for repair you'd need to buy one.  i have
a repair manual for a 475a i got free, but i had to wait nearly a year
before a manual company found the repair manual and it cost nearly $100
(but it is a nice scope, the one with the meter).

speaking of which, the manual i have is only for the scope, does any one
know how to remove/open the meter part and then open the scope?  i
haven't been able to figure that out and i need to fix it soon (minor
problems from bad storage, probably just needs a good cleaning inside).

also, there are companies that carry parts for the old scopes, even the
hard to find ones like knobs, custom parts and whole circuit boards.
write me off list if you need to and i'll look up the one that i'm
familiar with (he'll also trade stuff for old scopes, i had a stack of
tek scope mainframes etc. that i traded to him for some other
electronics gear in working order and freshly calibrated).

Phillip,

I forgot to ever post a follow-up to the list, but I actually did manage to
find a .pdf of the Tek manual. I googled around for a couple of hours and
ran across a couple of good sites, one of which had a manual available for
download:

http://bama.sbc.edu/tektroni.htm
www.diyguitarist.com/TestEquipment/Tektronix453.htm
http://www.reprise.com/host/scopes/default.asp
http://www.reprise.com/host/tektronix/home/default.asp

Lots of good stuff, including repair advice.

TTYL!
