Hello, I was wondering if anyone could give me some sources to purchase components in the states. I am just getting started and looking for small numbers of components right now, also looking for a few bread boards and maybe a small power supply to test on. Any information would be helpful. Hello, Matt, I recently bought a small (for 2 ICs) bread board from Radio Shack, found in AnyPlace USA. It's fine and for about $8. The same looking device was seen on a few web sites for less but had handling costs. I believe Mouser did not have this small one as I just ordered parts there and not a board. Mouser does carry the larger boards, some include terminals, some powered., but >$. For parts, I use some of the discounters on the Web: Allelectronics, and Dan's Small Parts. Why? Because the price is Right, often with great incentives to sell larger quantities. Do a search on those names too. But beware, some Web sites offer parts that they do not currently have, instead ordering them from the Far East at a great cost in time. That maybe Ok for some, but in one case for me a month's wait was too long and there was no certainty of when the order would arrive. I did get that order but with some sleep lost over it. I order almot exclusively from Didg-Key now, excellent search engine, reasonable pricing on most stuff, very good shipping, no minimum (but a $5 service fee if under $25). I almost never order from the others any more, but that's just me. I keep seeing neat stuff at BGMicro, they have a lot of surplus "stuff". Their LCD prices are absolutely killer. Walk in: Fry's Electronics if you have one in your area (I don't, but got to check one out in Phoenix at the masters) And, of course, Radio Shack. You may also be able to find surplus outfits with a good choice of new components, breadboards, etc in addition to the surplus stuff. I prototype almost everything out of Mouser, Jameco and Digikey in that order. I like Mouser now that they sell PICs, which I have been bugging them to do for 7 years. They tend to have all of the brand names I like to specify around, whereas Digikey (still a good supplier) has too much panasonic and not enough other brand names. Jameco are the underdogs, and they really focus on the hobbyist and small prototype shop which is me. They have Microengineering labs prototype boards, which I like, and also PICs. Newark (http://www.newark.com) is a giant supplier with a lot of depth of stock and a 3" thick catalog.
