Your correspondent is making the mistake that engineers and scientists the
world over make all too frequently. He is neglecting to include the effect
of magic in his otherwise completely sound calculations. Santa is magic.
Therefore he can do it, just like he did last year! QED.
Merry Christmas and thanks to all.
:)

Richard.

There are a few fatal flaws to the mathematical calculations.

Firstly, the method you described was only used when there were
significantly less children in the world.

The important thing you missed is that Santa is a major user of modern
technology. He has been cloned (I've seen him in almost every mall I've
been to) and he has added a warp drive mechanism to each of his sleighs.
Also with the advent of his new heads up display he is able to lock on
target with the radar on top of his sleigh (similar to Longbow Apache)
allowing him to quickly go from house to house and never get lost. The last
issue is the question about how many presents he has to carry at once. With
the advent of just-on-time delivery Santa is able to keep his sleigh light
and pick up presents as he goes around the world.

I hope hope everyone has a happy holidays and healthy new year,
Marc

P.S. If these ramblings make no sense, I'm sorry. I just finished exams
yesterday and now that I woke up today my head is still spinning

Oh please! We all know that Santa is (has been for a long time) a distributed process running on the love of parents (and other insane persons) the world over. Much like SETI online or napster (et all).

The process is cloned each generation and lies dorment until activated by the production of off-spring. It is fueled (and corrupted IMHO) by the advertizing of toys, etc...
The commerical virus has truely infected the Santa process and our kids think that happyness is to be purchased rather than made.

Please consider alternative gifts this year (especially for more mature people)
http://www.heifer.org

And for the little ones, consider the joy of actually produceing something with their own hands to give to a sibling, friend, or parent.

So, the correct term is "Santum" ?

As this year's Clause Encounters Of The Nerd Kind I was thinking
about treating myself to an XBox. As a piece of h/w of course !!

Anyone know MS's plans for the XBox ? It seems to be mostly a
games machine at the moment but MS being MS I'm sure they'll
invent new standards to shut everyone else out of future expansion
and implementation of set-top units

A single occurrence is a Santum, plural occurrences are Santa, just like

While I don't really know much about Microsloth's plans for the XBox in
the future, this month's Wired magazine has an interesting discussion
about it. While the article wasn't about the XBox's future in
particular, they do manage to say that basically they've somewhat given
up on dominating with the current hardware, and are hard at work
inventing a new machine to dominate with. The article also mentions that
this is a bit of folly, as it seem that it isn't the prowess of the
machine that dominates (as in the XBox) but the software available for a
machine that causes it to dominate (as in the PS2).

Just what I can remember anyways...

And I suppose you could compare IBM clones and Macs in that
way. The IBM platform was made available to any manufacturer.
The result was a large base of users and s/w, even though Apple
h/w was often superior (at a price). Then Windows and it's many
squillions of users came along and Apple took another beating

Then there's Microsoft's three strikes record... they only do "well" (and
that's open for discussion) on the third release of something...

Ie. Windows only became "acceptable" at 2000, CE on the third release. And
the list goes on,

so the next release of the XBOX will probably fall flat on it's face as
well. Then comes XBOX3 (or XBOX 2010 as it will probably be called)[1],
which should be commercially successful.

Although, back to your point, I do think that hardware needs time to build a
good reputation. One exception to this is the Play station, which came out
the same time as (or was announced rather) as Commodore where releasing the
Amiga CD32 - in other words it totally kicked the compitions arse. I think
that bye the time the second XBOX is released Microsoft will be having a lot
more support from the Japanese game developers, which may in the longer term
help - I think there's a psychological problem in that people see a lot of
the good games coming from Japan, and without those games for the XBOX then
theres little chance of success.

[1]. Given the Moores Law Cubed nature of computer graphics by the time
XBOX3/PLAYSTATION4 are released computer graphics will probably be so
realistic that there is less empathies on graphics and more back into
playability of games.

Well rant over, you can all know start picking holes in my observations.

Hi,

Going offtopic in an offtopic thread gheee :)
anyways..

I just did, last week :) well officially it is for the family, dvd player, and something
for the kids, but I ain't complaining either.
To bad there are just so few quality titles, particulary for the kids.
One can only hope for more selection as time goes by.
I paid 240$ for 3games and dvd kit, but it already going for
220$ and still falling...they really seem to be eager to sell this
christmas.

Well rumors are abundant for the XBOX2 aka Homestation, the all
encompassing dvd/stereo/video/games gizmo. Actually it's not far
from what the xbox is, so I guess there is somthing valid about these
rumors. Essentially one only need to add an larger HD, video in and some
s/w and they're all set to concer the sofa awell as the desktop.
Next is the kitchen or was it the bathroom ? ;)
