'[OT]: Recommendation for free Z80A C compiler/simu'

Hi,

In a fit of being retro, I decided to Internet-enable (web server) my old
Sinclair ZX Spectrum ......not too difficult to do but it might be a bit of
a laugh.
Hence, can anyone recommend any tools relating to the subject line?

Regards,
Dan

I don't know of any tools but take a look at Rabbit Semiconductors. They
make a Z180 board (a Z80 derivative) with Ethernet that can run up to
33Mhz. I have the links around here some where for the ZX80 2000 version.
A group of people got together and decided to build one with up to date
parts. Sorry for all the vagueness.

You may find this useful

http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Peaks/3938/z80_home.htm

http://bubl.ac.uk/link/s/sinclairspectrum.htm

or try typing "Sinclair Spectrum Software" "Z80 Assembler" into your
favourite
search engine

Also look at the Nintendo Gameboy

You could also try ZX80 and ZX81

Most sites have links to fellow enthusiasts and it doesn't take long to find
precisely what you are looking for.

I'm surprised that you have not managed to find what you are looking for
with your favourite Search Engine try Google.

Hi,

I did find some links via Google but the tools I obtained were not very
good (but not bad for free!). Hence, I was really just canvassing opinion
on a decent tool to use.

Cheers, though.

Dan

I think you will find the best free tools from this site.

http://www.devrs.com/gb/

I presume you have looked at Zilogs own tools

http://www.zilog.com/support/sd.html

and if you are building a web server their eZ80

http://www.zilog.com/ez80/ which is specifically
designed for the job.

If by simulator you mean running Spectrum software on a PC look for
Sinclair Spectrum Emulator.

Hi,

not too bad. E. g. the TI-83 HAS a Z80 and a free C compiler tailored to
it. If needed, I can look for the info.

Hi,

I did get a selection of emulators, of which one appeared to have a decent
monitor/debugger + some assemblers but it was C I was looking for because I
wanted to do it relatively quickly.

Cheers, again.

Dan

Hi,

Thanks for the offer but that might be stretching it a bit. I do have a

What is 'good tools' ? Everything used to run on CP/M and most CP/M
programs still live today (in Windows or X11 clothes). You can have a
complete toolchain C, assembler, locator, linker. Maybe try Dave
Dunfield's compiler(s) or visit Simtel and search for Z80. If you're
looking for ANSI C (32 bits etc) forget it. Ditto C++. But you can have
Pascal and Forth probably ... ;-)

Jeff Frohwein who is on this list was involved with the Gameboy compiler
and toolchain. This runs on a PC (and in Linux ?) and targets the GB
(which has a cropped Z80 clone CPU). You could use it I think.

If you really want a z80 C compiler, check the Dr Dobbs website for the
Small C compiler they published back in the early 80's. I believe it is now
available on CD ROM, with a code generator for 8086 as well.

It was a C to assembler generator, and was not full C (no floats or some of
the other "exotic" bits) but had an optimiser that looked for specific code
sequences and replaced them with more optimum ones. You then need to run the
generated code through an assembler. It originally generated 8080 code.

I don't know if they're still aroung, but Softools made a nice compiler.
Last time I used it was around '94.  Very reasonably priced ($99 at the time
IIRC).
