If you are interested in just playing around with using VB for serial
control of PICs and things, the learning version should be fine.

If you are interested in learning VB for real application development,
you should consider going to VB.NET.  It is a much more well-designed
language.  (or better yet, learn C#, but that is another story)

Forget vb.net. go straight to the pro or enterprise version.
Others have already mentioned some of the missing features in the learning
version. You will first miss the full MSCOMM control and be sorry, then the
disappointment will grow.

Some college & university bookstores sell the pro version at a student rate.
In any case, as a structured language/environment it's the quickest way to
get up to speed with PC programming and is worth the full price.
