People are different, everyone can't like or appreciate everyone. But that's no reason for banning people, sending them to jail or whatever...
We must have the right to express ourselves, we live in a democracy, don't we ?
I dont understand why so many of you get so very upset about Olin's postings. Why not use the delete button instead ? Outlook can easily filter postings also, if you know that you are the sensitive type...
If you go to the bookstore, you don't buy books you don't like ! Don't read postings you know you'll don't like !
You behave like a bunch of kids ! Why waste bandwith with this ? Put Olin back on the list, and leave the decision of reading or not reading his postings to the subscribers.
My personal opinion is that ANY contribution to the list is useful, if I don't like a posting, I delete it and forget it. That's all ! Simple , isn't it ?

Your position is invalid. When Olin called me stupid 4 years ago, he did it
offlist and sent me personal email. That was my first experience with this
list. I had no way of knowing that asking a valid newby question would get
me a response like that and therefore had no chance of screening it before
it happened. Others on the otherhand did send very helpful replies and I
stuck around. I sit on the fence on this one but then again...it's not my
decision nor yours is it.

Yes! I really like this attitude and I agree. However, the reality of life
is that many, many otherwise reasonable people, will completely loose their
tempers when they perceive an insult. I do this as well, more often than I
would like to admit.
My personal goal is to always take the good and leave the bad behind.
Violence (and violent words) are the last refuge of the incompetent. But we
must not pretend that we (or others) are competent all the time.
Insults, rudeness, violence on TV and in video games do have at least one
bad side effect: They tend to numb our sense of outrage. We become
acclimated to an environment full of pain. No I don't think video games
account for teenage shooters, BUT they should act as a flag that something
is wrong. Why aren't parents aghast at what little Johnny is playing at in
his PS2? Cowboys and Indians is one thing, blood and guts splattering
everywhere and people screaming in pain as they go down, cursing and
sobbing, dragging themselves along on shot off legs...
...no one who has ever killed people in a war wants to see that.
Your mother taught you not to be rude, not to call people names, not to
curse and to wear clean underwear for good reason. The further you are from
mayhem, the longer you have to think about it on the way.
Before we setup topic tags, the same advice was given many many times... If
you find someone's comments offensive, just ignore it! Easy! No flame wars,
no tempers lost, and no good people leaving the list in disgust. But somehow
John Payson still got called bad names when he offered a prayer for his wife
who had just died. And he left. As did Scott Dattalo, Wagner Lipinharsky
(sp?), Andy, Tjaart, Roman, Tony, Kelly and many others. Some have returned,
others have not.
Now, having said all that, I have an idea that could allow Olin to
participate (take the good) while not allowing any rudeness on the list
(leave the bad)...
Those of you who are hot to have Olin on the list should find a volunteer to
moderate Olin's posts. Olin can respond to that person rather than to the
list (I think there may be a way to make that automatic... ) and that person
can just not forward posts that are rude or cut out the insults. Replace
them with &$^%*)*#*&^$ if you like. Send them on to the person offlist if
you must. Just act as Olin's... PR manager? Conscience?

I believe that Eudora has a feature where it 'checks' the content of the
message and assigns a 'heat rating'? based on certain words and word
patterns within the text, with settings so that you may delay all messages
written that have a heat rating higher than a preset level. This may be the
answer for Olin :-)
