Sorry if this is mind rottingly stupid ... but can you get access
(inside the monitor) to the video post reversing circuitry but pre RGB
split up? I know thats what I would explore as a possibility even if it is
straw grasping (I hate high voltages/floating chassis etc but if one is
out of options....).
If this is not recorded then is an external display an option next to
the monitor (no OSD)?

Lance,

No, the video goes directly to the LCD display circuitry (TFT, LCD colour
monitor).

David,

Here we go again...

Isn't this the topic we went over a couple of months ago -- I'll bet you a
dollar to a donut we see all the same questions :-)

I assume, since you are commented on urgency that this was back-burnered for
a while and has now forced itself back to the foreground.

I wish you the best of luck on this. My guess is you are not going to find a
satisfactory answer.

Bob,

Yeah, a bit of a Mobius strip huh.

I had several options I was investigating and they have all led to dead
ends. I now decided that even if I have to change the microcontroller
platform and use a device with built in OSD then it will be worth the effort
of changing the development platform to suit rather than trying to get a
stand alone device to meet the requirements.

It seems people are joining and leaving PICLIST reasonably regularly and
thus re-submitting a request periodically may result in the feedback I am
looking for.

Regards

(Hate to say this, BUT...)  Train the operators to read backwards text?
Yeah, "non-optimal"...

Mark,

These operators don't like being trained. Maybe we just connect probes
directly into their heads and display the text on their minds.

You might like to look into building an OSD system with discreet
component which implements the functionality you require.  The March
1999 issue of Everyday Practical Electronics contained a design based
around a 10MHz 16F84 for a video time and date generator.  This might be
of interest as a starting point.  Unfortuneately I don't have the
article to hand but you can get details from
http://www.epemag.wimborne.co.uk/0399.htm and the source code is
available from http://www.epemag.com/library2.htm.  The whole back issue
can be ordered from the site above.

You might like to have a look at this link which I came across today
which gives an overview of character generation circuits with links to
examples. http://www.tinaja.com/glib/muse134.pdf
