Just curious if anyone else managed to get a Nitron demo board?
Curious to compare a few things. One is if your's smells like
"just let the smoke out of the chips" fragrance we all love ;-]

I have one I got yesterday setting on my desk, I haven't plugged it in
yet, but I did install the software.  I looked into the development
software costs, they were high($1900), since I just purchased a Pic C
compiler, programmer, and 8051 C I think I'll ultimately avoid this
chip.

Yes, mine arrived last week and it even lights up when I turn on
the power!  The downside is, the demo compiler is limited to 1K
code size and I was (unofficially) quoted in the neighborhood of
about US$1000 for the full 4K version.  Too bad, I suspect that will
be out of reach for my budget.

The advertising I saw said that the compiler was limited to 4K....

Got mine yesterday; haven't plugged it in.  Didn't notice any particularly
strong odor, although I'm a bit dissappointed by the apparent lack of
documentation for the thing (beyond instructions for running the canned
demo), and the fact that all the unpopulated holes in the board are filled
with solder.  Perhaps that's the difference between a cheap (free) demo
board and a slightly more expensive "evaluation board."  The $68.05 eval
board for the 68705 was a lot more impessive...

The 4K version is free. Excerpt from the welcome.txt file:

I don't think you should judge a processor on a "showcase" development
environment (any more than you'd judge a PIC based on the expensive IAR
compiler, for instance.)  There's a lot of third party and freeware support
for motorola's 8-bit processors (well, for ALL of motorola's processors.)

(hmm.  There USED to be a lot of freeware downloadable directly from
motorola, but I can't seem to find so much as a 6808 assembler there at the
moment (although it may be just an option for 6805 or 6811 assemblers.)
How ... unfortunate.)

Metrowerks, the CodeWarrior folks, is a Motorola company. Could be that Mot is just trying to push business their way.

Yup. Took me 20 minutes to find the "How to reprogram the demo board with
Codewarrior" appnote on the CD though. I'll play with it later.

I noticed that, too. Opened the box and there was a strong smell of burning
silicon. "Oh, *great*" I thought. Then I hooked up one of the two batteries
Motorola included and it powered up fine. Hmm...

I found the schematic that shows the rest of missing bits too.

Is it just me or does Codewarrier seem just bit non-intuitive?

Mine worked too but the smell was so strong I took the glass to it before
powering up. Managed to get a bit of a headache it was that strong. On mine
it was right up there along with the amount from some early experiments ie
if this runs on 12 120 should be 10x better.....  (I was 9) ;-]

Free demo board offer is over now, c'est finis, but the cost is low
(check Digikey, Avnet in North America). $20 or $25, IIRC.
