Hi,
    I have a 12 V 1200mAh NiCd battery pack. I need to build a battery
charger for it. I'd appreciate any pointers. Thanks a lot. Vic

Hi Vic, here is how I do it (cheap), allow
1.4v/cell for fully charged cells, so 10x
1.4 = 14v.

Get a 7815 (15v) 3-pin regulator. And suitable
DC supply, probably 18v dc.

Then allow:
1200mAH x 0.1 = 120mA (safe continual charge)

So use a 8.2 ohm series resistor, about 5w.
Example:
fully charged = 14v = 15v-14v = 1v/8.2ohm = 120mA
fully discharged = 9v = 15v-9v = 6v/8.2ohm = 730mA

This is just about perfect, for the cost of a
simple 7815 regulator and a 8.2ohm 5w resistor
you have a fully functional battery charger that
will charge pretty quick and give a good one or
two hour charge, but also be perfectly safe for
continual charge. We have a few of these type
chargers working in the workshop and normally
just put the battery on before going home (5pm)
and take it off the next morning (9am) and
have used these type systems for almost 20 years.
:o)
