Nmap ("Network Mapper") is an open source utility for network exploration or
security auditing. It was designed to rapidly scan large networks, although
it works fine against single hosts.

       http://www.insecure.org/nmap/index.html

Nmap uses raw IP packets in novel ways to determine what hosts are available
on the network, what services (ports) they are offering, what operating
system (and OS version) they are running, what type of packet
filters/firewalls are in use, and dozens of other characteristics. Nmap runs
on most types of computers, and both console and graphical versions are
available. Nmap is free software, available with full source code under the
terms of the GNU GPL.

And against your own. Try nmap 127.0.0.1 on your 'secure' (haha) home
computer some time. If you are behind a firewall you can breathe, if not,
you are going to have a shock (at least the crowd running 'stock' machines
with 'default' setups with M$ operating systems will). Should tech you
about what happens when you are impatient and keep clicking on the OK
buttons on those pesky boxes during setup. nmap is widely used on unix to
check setups.
