'[OT]: MP3 & 486 processor'

Hello!

Has anyone used mp3 player on 486 ?
I have a 486 dx4, 100Mhz, 24MB Ram, Win95, soundblaster AWE 32 value.
The problem is that Winamp can't play fluently the files which are 128 bit sampled. Is the problem in too slow processor or somewhere else?

Please help...

Hi,

Sounds like speed. Listening to MP3s via Winamp on my P200 with 48MB of RAM
causes slowdown of other applications running and Winamp output breaks up
when disk accesses occur, etc.

I have P133, and i occasionaly hear stutters, breaks, etc when compiling in
VC. :-)

The 100 mhz is a bit too slow for winamp. if you had linux you could play
them at half the bitrate. then it would work as i played mp3s on 486dx33
under linux of course :)

There is an option in winamp which allows it to set its own priority.  If
you set this to highest you may get better performance.  Don't expect to
be able to use your computer while playing mp3s, though.

Too slow a processor for WinAmp. You machine CAN play MP3s, just not
with WinAmp. I suggest you try a DOS based MP3 player outside of windows, it
works quite well. TTYL

Hi,

It wasnt an "attack" as the box is not connected to the Internet (well,
apart from the Seiko TCP/IP stack I have hanged off it).....I think the
hard disk might be a bit dodgy.

I run ATGuard on the Windows box and its pretty good......although it has
been put out to pasture (along with my packet sniffer) since I got off
Freeserve; I don't seem to get any portscans/attacks etc on the new ISP
(New Scientist).

You might try damp

Try doing a search on your favorite search engine.  ( I used google.com
and found this one and another as the first two matches)

Of course you can't! You have a BIG BIG BIG program eating processor power of your system (Win 95). I've used it with some DOS players, and it plays nicely. Some years ago I made a mp3 player for the car of my boss using only a 486/100, 16 mb ram and a cheap sound board. Worked nicely.

I have implemented a Jukebox based on the original WinPlay3 using W95 and a 486/66 MHz. It is working fine but I had to increase available memory up to 64MB to ensure there is no discontinuity on the playing.

Try to port the mpg123 Unix MP3 player's source to djgpp. That should work
on a DOS-box with a 486 and a math processor.
