'[OT]: Leonid Meteors'

Annual Leonid meteor shower due in the next few days (Saturday to Monday NZ
time.)

This is predicted to be very spectacular in the Northern hemisphere
but probably very poor in NZ.
Always a chance of something good though.

In NZ viewing is low on the horizon at about 6am and 6pm when the Sun will
be competing badly.

Northern hemisphere best times will vary - there is lots on the web about
this so if interested search on "Leonids".

There will be two tails - the main one Saturday NZ time / Friday US and a
smaller one Monday NZ / Sunday US. The in between night may also have some.

We shall see: I'm going to do my Leonids-viewing as far away from city
lights as I can find, at the beach in southern New Jersey about twenty
miles below Atlantic City.  It's 90 miles from here, and I'm not looking
forward to the drive or the 0230 wake-up call.  Should be good viewing,
though, provided the weather holds as expected: clear, cold, and calm.

The last really good meteor shower I saw was way back in the 60's as a
boy on my grandfather's farm.  Even then, the peak rate was just a few
hundred meteors an hour.  If this one showers us with several thousand
an hour, it should be quite a show.

Hmmm, I'd heard differently. 100 shooting stars per minute are expected.
I'm sure I can manage that many wishes - shotgun theory, one of them
is bound to come true

And as usual it'll be either overcast all week or cold and pissing down.
Really must have a word with whoever organises these things, they're
doing a rotten job

It helps to have a subscription, preferably a life-time and beyond one -
single incidence cover often works just as well but you may find it hard to
understand the results. :-)
