'[OT]: LCD source'

Hi all,
I am having trouble finding a surplus source for 2x24 backlit LCDs.
I would settle for non-backlit but prefer a backlight.  I found 2x20
non-backlits at http://www.flat-panel.com for $8 and 2x40 backlit LCDs for
$10 at EIO so I figure 2x24 is out there but I'm just not looking in
the right place.  Any help is appreciated!
Thanks,
Charles

It is unlikely that you will find 2x24 on the open market.  You'll need to have
a custom made LCD, or at least find a manufacturer which has the uncommon sizes.

The reason is that the hd44780 LCD controller and its clones memory is mapped to
the display in two 40 byte segments, which are not next to each other.  The
first segment starts at memory address 0x00 and the second at 0x40 (64).  A 2x20
display uses the first segment for both lines (0-19, 20-39) A 4x20 uses both
segments, but in a strange pattern (0-19, 64-83, 20-39, 84-103). a 2x40 does
what you'd expect (0-39, 64-103)

To fabricate a 2x24 display you would have to use more driver chips than the
2x20, but not all the outputs would be used.  At this point the space needed on
the board becomes larger than the LCD, due to the extra driver chips.  It would
likely be mapped as 0-23 and 64-87.

So, in other words, it has been and will likely continue to be more cost
effective to change your application to use another size display rather than get
that odd size.

BTW, I haven't looked at my LCD data sheet for the last month, my numbers may be
off (doubt it) but the concept is the same.  *Always* refer to the data sheet!

I can tell you that Samsung manufacture a 2x24 display not backlit though.
Type UC242917. I don't know if it's a special, but it doesn't look it, it's
used in an Elmeg CS100 ISDN Telephone http://www.elmeg.de/ .
I would say that you would be lucky to get one surplus

The Varitronix catalogue of a couple of years ago shows two
24x2 displays,

MDL(S)-24265 (3.20W x 5.15H chars)
MDL(S)-24269 (5.40W x 8.70H chars)

Block diagrams show 1 controller and 2 driver chips, standard 14
pin connection. They are available in backlit versions

Hello all,

I am looking for a source for Hitachi LCDs. I got a couple from a local
surplus place (it was all they had) and used one for a project that I would
like to go into limited production of (maybe 50 units total). The LCD I need
is a "standard" LCD - HD44780 controller, but it is a lot smaller
(especially in terms of thickness - about half as thick as an Optrex). The
model number is LM052L (the whole module is made by Hitachi I believe). The
size is approx. 3.15"x1.42". Does anyone know of a source of these or
another display of the same size? At least suggestions on where to look?

Thanks,

Andy Meng

Please take a look here:

http://www.crystalfontz.com/products/1602b/index.html

Thinnest backlit one is the "JPE", thinnest overall is the reflective (non-backllit) "NYA". Some "fun" ones here:

Are you looking for 1 line by 16 character displays?  I may have a number of
these units available - take a look at

I think that Timeline has lots of that particular part.
