'[OT]: Free Web Page Hosts'
2001\02\19@151416 by Dipperstein, Michael

face picon face
This is about as OT as it gets, but I'm sure that there are a lot of people on
this list that can help me.

I have several web pages, mostly academic, hosted on a university machine, under
my student account.  My account will expire in June, and since I am no longer a
student, it will not be renewed.

I am looking for a new server to host my web pages.  The biggest requirement I
have of this server is that it's free.  There are a lot of free hosts out there,
but each seems to have it's own catch.

I need about 5MB of space to hold my pages.

I don't want to sign away my rights allowing repackaging and redistribution of
my work.  I don't care about most of the stuff, but some things, like the work I
did on my thesis are purposefully under LGPL.

I would prefer to avoid adds, especially big banners or pop-ups.

I don't mind that the host monitors usage and sells anonymous data, but I don't
want any personal data of myself or the page visitors to be sold.

I have a page up with some PERL CGI that I did for a school project.  I'd like
to keep that up in a cgi-bin directory, though I can always tar the files and
let people run it on their own.

I've looked at a bunch of hosts and thought I found my dream host with pagespin,
but they close down in the (northern hemisphere) summer months.

If any of you have had good or bad experiences with certain hosts, or can
recommend one, I'd like to hear about them.

-Mike

Not free, but basic sites on addr.com, with/without domain hosting,
are only $9-10/month.

Also, most basic [pay for service] ISPs will allow you to have
your own personal page as part of the package. Many of those are
now available for about $10/month.

All piclist.com members can host as much content as they want on piclist.com

The interface to edit the content is a bit funky, but its getting better all
the time.

Fill out the membership application at the site, then zip up your site and
email it to me and I'll post it for you.

Michael,

You can host your web pages in http://www.terra.es. You can open as
many accounts as you want and with each one of them you get
an e-mail address and 5 Mb for web hosting.

Don't feel yourself guilty for abbusing of this service ;-)

Best regards

Joan
