I concur with that assessment whole heartedly. I trust Mark more than I
trust myself <WRY GRIN>

Re: Easy ways to seen a few bucks to someone. So far I've been able to find
the following:

WesternUnion.com costs and arm and both legs. $15/transation PLUS $10/out of
country PLUS etc....

PayPal.com is great but does not work outside the us.

i-escrow.com does work outside the us, but only (apparently) by mailing a
check from the us and it costs $2.50 to do it and is kind of a pain.

Postal money orders are a total pain in the ass but may be the only way to
go. One must physically go to the Post Office and buy the order (small fee),
mail the physical item (small fee), wait for a few weeks, and then the
person on the other end must take it to their bank, etc...

Amazingly in this day and age that one cannot "just do it" via the web.

So... here is what I recommend: We ask Mark nicely if he can open a PayPal
account and set up one of their "Buy it" links for me to post on
PICList.com. Each person who clicks on the link will sign up with PayPal
(with Mark as the referrer so he gets PayPals $5 per new account for his
trouble) and they will each donate whatever they like. After a month (or
when it seems appropriate) Mark will do the money order or whatever to get
the funds to Wouter. And hopefully, we will get some cool new features in
WISP, WLoader and/or JAL for our efforts, besides the nice feeling of having
given credit where it is due.

I'd also like to suggest that Mark set one up for Tony Nixon (for the
Engine, ROMZap, etc...), Scott Dattalo (for gpsim and some really good
code), and Jory (for starting the list). If I've missed any other really big
contributors who are not getting paid for what they have done, please let me
know. And Mark, if you don't want to, I will, so don't feel like I'm putting
you on the spot totally here.

Now listen, I'm not saying that everyone should chip in right this instant
and pay these people "their due" but I, for one, have wanted to send a few
bucks to each of these people as a way of saying "thank you" and to
encourage them to continue doing what they do for the PICList. And I think
the PICList admins should encourage that by making it possible (since it
doesn't seem to be; at least not in a cost effecting and private way) and,
in fact, easy.

Are we together on this?

One thing worth mentioning:  Typically money orders are expensive to cash in
other countries, on the order of $5 to $20.  Cash is the cheapest to convert,
but not the best to send (and often against some customs rules).

If possible, the best route is to use credit cards.  If the recipient can accept
credit cards, the charge is very minimal compared to nearly any other method.
Currency exchange is also handled without charge through credit cards.  If we
are buying him equipment, we could also just buy it and have it drop shipped to
him (whether from a local merchant or not), paying with a credit card.  (set up
an X.Com account, transfer the money from paypal to x.com, and buy the equipment
with the x.com direct draw charge card.)

On a related note, Microsoft is setting up an international money transaction
system of sorts that enables you to route money from one account to another, any
bank, anywhere.  They are said to be developing some sort of adaptive
transaction routing that finds the cheapest route between the two banks
(somewhat like tcp/ip routing), and also enabling it to become redundant...
Should be interesting, I imagine the fees are going to be cheaper than what is
available now, but not too cheap.

Credit cards are a good idea for this purpose.

They incur a 3% (depending on amount and size of transactions) fee from
the banks.

One other thing is that a credit machine may not accept a card from one
particular country to another. I find VISA is a problem here. In this
case a signature is required and a trip to the local bank to complete
the transaction.

If Mark has too much on his plate to handle this task, I've got a credit
facillity online that spends most of it's time in the off position and
don't mind helping out. If Wouter has a credit card then the funds can
be transferred directly to it.

Come to think of it, that's the way money works for me. In one hand and
straight out the other.

Only until everyone starts using it.

Hmmm...  Willing, Able, though busy in work search <G>  If anyone sends
me money via any route, I can forward it (I'll have to get an address to
send it to, think I can manage that.  Just specify what it's for,
please, so I don't get confused <G>)

Oh, also please specify whether you want to do this "Covertly" or
"Overtly" so when I pass this on I know whether to list your name and
amount, or just name, or put you down as "Anonymous".  Anything to make
things work.
