'[OT]: Disposible cells in Australia'

Just wondering about the "disposable" cellular phones in Australia.
My mom's headed down there in a few days, and she'd like it very
much to find an inexpensive cellular phone that can be purchased
at common locations, just to have in case she needs assistance
while touring. I know they can be purchased here at gas stations
and electronics stores and just about anywhere; do similar services
exist there?
I believe she'll primarily in or near Sydney for most of the trip...
Thanks!
Mike H.

I've not seen disposable phones.
But if she is on a plan over in Mike-Hordville she can probably get
"roaming" turned on which will allow her to use her current phone / plan
over here.
They do sell "disposable" simcards though. You buy a dollar amount of calls
and you get a number to use with it. Lasts about 6 months, I think. If she
uses the dollar amount of the card she can get a top up.

If you already have a phone that has suitable band compatibility, you should be able to buy a prepay
SIM card for it to use over there. I think Telstra and Orange operate there - have a look on their
websites.

OPTUS has prepaid phones and sim for $79 bux! Australian. Samsung phone I
think but for 80 bux who cares, it really is a throw away item.
One of these would make sure that if you lost it or got it stolen whilst on
hols, then, oh well it only cost $79 dollars instead of the hassle of
replacing your regular phone, cancelling your sim, and waiting for a new
phone ( the biggest hassle of them all).
I saw this ad in a shop window the other day, I am not affiliated in any way
with OPTUS.
Cheers

Also there are number of places that hire out mobiles on a temporary basis,
something like $3 a day plus calls. They have desks at the airport where you
can hire them...
