Antipodes: The Other Side of the World

There is an informal and anecdotal belief among Americans that if you
dig a hole deep enough, eventually you would come out in China. This
is theoretically possible if the hole is angled in the right way, but
if you dig straight down and through the exact center of the earth
from anywhere in the 48 contiguous United States, you'd come out in
the Indian Ocean. Only in parts of Argentina or Chile would a straight
hole emerge in China.

Thanks.  I just wasted an hour putting together a Google Map webpage
to show me exactly where I'd end up, given any starting location:

http://www.ubasics.com/dighole/

It shows two maps.  Both are draggable.  The two maps show the
antipodal views of the world - if you start digging down at the
location on the top map, you'll pop out the location on the bottom map
and vice versa

That is COOL!

Looks like about the best you can do is somewhere off the east coast of the
USA gets you somewhere off the west coast of Australia.

Colombia takes you to Singapore.

Hawaii takes you squarely to the center of Botswana or Namibia.

New Zealand is opposite Spain, with a bit of Morocco.

Ok, no more getting work done for me today...

James.

You realise you've just spoiled the whole point of the title of the film "The China Syndrome"?

I suppose a film called "The somewhere in the Indian Ocean Syndrome" wouldn't have fitted across a cinema sign...  :-)

In a more abstract way, if things continue the way they're going,
/anything/ you do in the US may end up somewhere in China :)

So that belief may be some kind of premonition...
